Tough call. I'd imagine it would look like hopkins - calzaghe only without toney fading late on.

It would be an up an down fight probably dictated by how many openings joe gives james.

I say it's a close fight and very close to call

Calzaghe slaps Toney to a UD. An opponent who is mobile, has a high punch-output and fast hands is Toney's nightmare.

Toney I consider a greater fighter, very much so, and a better fighter...one of my all-time favorites, actually. But I don't like how the style matches up with him. I feel he could have some beautiful counter punching moments, like he ordinarily does, but that Calzaghe would pull away coming down the stretch with all that damn slappity activity and Toney would not be able to stop it and get tired. Counter it at times, brilliantly, but not shut it down and lose a decision, maybe a controversial one, as in better punches VS volume of punches.

You kidding me? A prime Toney, Hopkins, Jones would all eat this guy up.

This would be easy for Toney.

Calzaghe got picked apart by counter punchers like

    - BHop: 43 year old
    - Robin Reid: C Level in his prime
    - Paul Mason: Below F Level in his prime

A Prime Toney one of the best counter punchers that fought this era, would have slaughtered Calzaghe.

James Toney would eat him for breakfast after he's done schooling him.

They say that this is a stylistic nightmare for Toney. But he dealt with guys like Mccallum and Nunn who are arguably as good as Calzaghe.

Calzaghe has never faced a fighter that can counter punch like Toney. And if a 43 year old Hopkins could drop Calzaghe and a shot RJJ dropped him..

A prime Toney could actually score the knockout over Calzaghe. Watch how Toney TKO'd Nunn when he threw that left hand

I'd say this is pretty fair assessment.

A few problems Toney could potentially run into....

*Toney's shell defense would not be as effective against a lefty*

*One of the worst type of opponent to stand infront of, is a busy southpaw*

*Toney, even in his prime, was lazy*

Toney could fall victim of judges who put a value on aggression, no matter how ineffective*

The fight would probably come down to whether Toney got enough credit for his accuracy over Joe's volume, cause you know he aint going to attempt to match Joe's workrate.
