I think Canelo could win a decision, though depending on which division they fight in could make the difference. James “ Lights out “ Toney was an all time great in my book, but sometimes he dropped the ball against lesser fighters as well as the great ones.
2 great counter punchers, I think Canelo may be forced to take the lead and Toney would be very patient. Probably not an exciting fight but one fought at a very high skill level. I think Toney would probably edge Canelo at MW or SMW and maybe 8-4ish at LHW. Again not exciting but probably very tactical and closely contested throughout.
Toney would never be able to make 155 without becoming ineffective. Canelo boxes the ears off the lethargic, tired Toney.
Toney W UD or Draw (8-4/7-5/6-6). This is a close, competitive fight & I see it being a hybrid of Toney's fights with McCallum & Griffin - two skilled counterpunches. It's nonsense & fanboy talk to suggest that Toney would have an easy night with Canelo, when he struggled & lost to lesser fighters.
Excuses. It's his fault he was under prepared & out of shape. Also he wasn't out of shape for the Prince Charles, Griffin or Thadzi fights.
OK seriously, it would be a hard fight for either. I actually prefer Canelo in the skills department. I feel that he is less flashy than Toney but that his style is faster and more economical. That said, A version of Toney that is in shape and ready to go might outwork Canelo and it's going to be a quantity vs quality thing again. I'd fancy Canelo to inch ahead but it would come down to who was judging the fight and what they preferred. Best for Toney they fought somewhere neutral and not in Vegas.
