Carlos, on a late round TKO, or strong UD after 15.Monzon on a different level than Toney.

Monzon imo, say what you like about his technical deficiencies, i'm satisfied with his effectiveness, regardless of his finest scalps being from heads smaller than his own etc. And on a styles match-up, i like him. Again, his footwork is far from the best from a technical standpoint, but he has multi-directional movement and can box on the outside, which is bad for Toney the way i see it. Not as bad for Toney as Hopkins would be imo, but still Monzon for me, and i'm comfortable with that pick. When things are close, range-wise, Toney will be sharper, and Monzon's bludgeoning type shots will be foiled by Toney's better work. But that's hardly going to be the telling aspect of the fight. Monzon.

Monzon UD. Too busy for Toney and exceptional at utilizing the height and reach advantage he'd have over Toney. Toney could do some good work on the inside but likewise, Monzon would tie him up and roughhouse him plenty. Toney ain't stopping Monzon and I see that as his only option.

Monzon outpoints Toney and again surprises everyone who are still inclined to to be surprised. Monzon's doubters would be the only ones to be surprised.

Very, very difficult fight for Monzon IMO. Toney eats up those straight punchers, even those as accurate as Monzon because he's so good at making punch two and three miss. Then Toney counters very well. Monzon excells at distance and controlling the transitions between those distances, but that is where Toney is at his counterpunching best, slipping and drilling back, usually with pretty hard punches.

Where Monzon would win the fight would probably be inside where he would be to busy for Toney, as has been said. Monzon just wouldn't wilt like Nunn, Toney won't knock him out. My guess would be a decision that seems wider that the fight felt.

I pick Monzon, though I agree that the first half of the fight will be rough for him. He was really good at making the other guy work and take him outside his comfort level, something of an achilles heel for Toney; if you could keep him going backwards and made him work three minutes a round, you had a real decent shot at him.

Monzon would thrive in the last three rounds. Toney would be in there with a different sort of cat.

Ultimately Monzon's commitment, ruthlessness and icy-cool stare make the difference.

You would have been constantly surprised during the 70's.

I like Monzon against dentable fighters. Which Toney is the opposite of, at MW especially

And I think Toney would be troubled most by fast hitters and movers. Which Monzon definatley isn't.

Bad style matchup for Monzon. His brutal, yet average speed punching is bread and butter for a masterful counter-puncher. And his physically imposing style would not be so imposing to a future HW champ, James Toney, imo

Toney was never hw champ. The only thing he was at hw was a fat, cheating blob.

Toney´s chin wasn´t as good as mw as at the higher weights and if Nunn was on the verge defeating him Monzon certainly could do it. Stylewise, Toney has an advantage but Monzon would get to him in the late rounds, especially if it goes 15. Toney would counterpunch him but Monzon would be too busy in the end.
