James Toney vs Chad Dawson @ 175

You are right, Toney was inconsistent at 175 pounds.

We are talking about the version who beat Hembrick. That Toney beats Dawson. Of course an unfit version of Toney will get beaten.

 

Toney's laziness aside, it's more a matter of styles, not necessarily class.

I thought Dawson lost to Johnson, but even a well-trained and motivated Toney wouldn't have an easy time with Dawson. However, Toney on his game would tear Johnson apart. We'd see how tough Johnson is, because he'd take a shitload of punishment fighting James.

 

Pick em on a random night, but if they both came in their prime mentally and physically.. Toney knocks him spark out.

 

It's like Dawson has little mental lapses here and there and it comes back to bite him in the ass.

 

The problem I see for Dawson in this fight is he could start really well, sweep rounds taking advantage of Toney's static footwork, but ultimately he's going to have to take a few shots from a precise counterpuncher like James Toney. I don't think his concentration or stamina is good enough to avoid that for a full 12.

And when that happens...I wouldn't be confident he can take it.

 

Toney during his prime will present a lot of problems to dawson.

 

Toney, surprisingly was an average light heavyweight, for this reason id pick Dawson to win. The Toney that beat Jirov schools Chad Dawson thought without doubt.

 

I do not think Toney was an average light heavyweight, he just never got a title shot. Toney was in good position to get a crack at the title both times when losing to Montell Griffin. I thought Toney deserved the decision both times. The first was close and no robbery. The second was a robbery.

I favour the inshape lightheavyweight version of Toney against Dawson.
Of course the out of shape version (McCallumIII, Thadzi) gets beaten by Dawsson.

 

I agree, rating Toney as average at 175lbs is reducing him to his weight drained version against McCallum and Thadzi. Toney showed excellent performances against Duran Williams (a former lhw title challlenger), Hembrick and Delgado. His showings against a prime Griffin are also very underrated in my opinion.

 

That is true. Toney outboxed solid fighters like Williams, Delgado and Hembrick while being in good shape for those fights.

Griffin was a world class light heavyweight and Toney beat him IMO.

 

Dawson would build up a points lead, but then the end would come, similar to the end of Toney-Jason Robinson. Toney by KO. For sure.

At 175lbs Toney's power would be pretty serious and he picks his shots well. If Glen can wobble Dawson on pretty much any wide looping shot that landed then you can bet your a$$ that James puts him to sleep. "Lights out" by lights out would be my prediction
