Only promoters stood in the way of a Jackson-Toney title unification. Arum wouldn't do business with Don King.

You can't really blame Toney for taking 'filler defences' - Toney was the IBF MW champ for 16 months before moving up to SMW for good. In these 16 months, he defended his belt against Reggie Johnson and against Mike McCallum twice. He also had three 'filler defences' and one fight at the SMW limit in between, 7 fights in total over a 16 month span. 3 of these 7 fights against future HOFs (McCallum might be an ATG). That's quite impressive.

Toney didn't fight Kalambay, ok, but he faced pretty much everyone else in his career.

Toney was lucky not to lose his title for coming in overweight against Dell'Aquila.

While I think that Tiberi deserved a close decision, he didn't have Toneys number, nor was it Tiberis bodypunching that made the difference. Toney had no problems during the first couple rounds, but he was weight-drained and had the flu. He had cramps in the second half of the fight and could barely walk towards the end, it's plain to see. Tiberi just catched Toney on a very bad night.

This shouldn't be an excuse because Toney chose to enter the ring that night; as I said I think Tiberi deserved a close decision and the belt. But it wasn't the robbery of the centuries as some claim, the fight was close.

Toney offered Tiberi a rematch in Tiberis backyard, but Tiberi retired instead.

To be fair to Toney, I cant criticize him for how active he was, he was a true fighter.

Although he got a lucky in the rematch with McCallum, I felt he got outworked :thumbsup

Yeah, he had lost a great deal of the respect and expectation he gained from his first few world title fights by the time he fought Toney. He was actually in bad need of a good performance to restore faith in him when he went up against James.

I don't really agree with the idea Toney broke him down either, at least not with the implication it was some sort of Chavez'esque methodical worked out victory, that's going too far imo, there was nowhere enough bodywork being done to slow him down had he actually been in good shape.Nunn did what he had been doing in his last few fights, was lazy defensively and got hit with the same big punches he did against starling and Curry.the difference was that unlike Starling, Toney had the power to take advantage of it and get the stoppage as Nunn slowed.Stamina was definitely a factor, but so was sheer sloppiness from Nunn.

Dave was a good fighter, young and learning but rose to the occasion of this fight. James may have felt drained but Dave's body shots had something to do with that. Tiberi was up for this fight and he won it, despite the decision. I think Dave would have took a rematch at 168 but James moved on and away and Dave quit because of the unjust decision

I have no opinion as I didn't see the fight yet. Props for Toney for admitting a decision he felt is wrong even though it went in his favor. Many fighters wouldn't do that.

Just saw the fight and thought Tiberi won pretty decisively. I'm a fan of Toney but I can't be biased as Tiberi outworked him. This was one of if not Toney's worst performance. Here's an interesting article on Tiberi. Didn't know he trained with Hopkins.

    James Toney - Dave Tiberi

    1. 10-9 great round, back to back action, Toney lands cleaner, Tiberi very tough, Tiberi rocked at the end, Dave reminds Antuofermo
    2. 9-10 Tiberi very aggressive and rough, effective in close quarters, Toney fights in spurts
    3. 9-10 close, Tiberi keeping the pace. non stop attack, no air for Toney, James looks tired and hurt
    4. 9-10 clear, Tiberi restless, Toney inactive and looks not in top shape
    5. 9-10 clear
    6. 10-8 clear, Tiberi's glove shred and Toney got some extra time, Toney more effective, fights smarter than before, tiberi warned about low blows and then gets 1 point educted between rounds (!)
    7. 10-9 close, Toney more effective, landing the cleaner blows, Tiberi tough and game
    8. 9-10 clear, Tiberi beats Toney to the punch, aggressive, rough and effective, Toney looks very tired
    9. 9-10 clear, Toney dead tired, Tiberi scores in close, Toney's punches very wide and lack of power
    10. 10-9 close, Tiberi coming forward but not connecting clearly, Toney little bit sloppy but able to land better punches
    11. 10-9 very close, Toney lands some slow but clean punches, badly tired, Tiberi comes forward but not so effective like before, still close round
    12. 9-10 close, Tiberi more active, Toney exhausted, short brake for taping Tiberi's glove, Tiberi's constant pressure gives him the round

    113-114 Tiberi

    Official: 111-117, 115-112, 115-111
