For the Light Heavyweight Championship. Who would win this battle? As a Champion Eddie was considered a very good Champion. & was given a legitimate shot against Spinks in thier fight which never happened.

Toney is a pretty hard fighter to beat at pretty much any weight class. Of Course, it could be argued that Mustafa was a prime fighter at 175, whereas Toney was basically past it by the time he reached that weight. And never spent much time there, dropping losses to Montell Griffin and beating a string of who's who's. Nevertheless, I don't see Eddie scoring a knockout here, and his best chance is to win a decision. Toney would be tough to outbox and would be on him all night like white on rice.

I'm going with James by a close decision.

i think toney would be a bit too slick for eddie who would struggle to hit him clean and eddie would be out pointed by a UD

I don't know, if this was the same Eddie that showed up for Marvin Johnson, then Toney would have had an entirely different animal than what he was used to fighting. That's a big "if", however.

I try to think of the guy at his best at the weight. At his best, Eddie would be popping that jab at Toney and shooting that right hand. He wouldn't have to pursue Toney and fall into any of his traps. I'll take Eddie by close but clear decision. And Toney would be just as likely to be out of shape as Mustafa anyway.

Toney has a better overall resume than Mustafa, no doubt. But at 175, no. Toney had 2 losses to Montell Griffin (pretty good fighter) and 2 wins over Anthony Hembrick (overated, eventually exposed fighter). Mustafa has wins over Saad Muhammed and Marvin Johnson, and fairly close losses to Spinks and Galindez. Was Toney a better fighter? Yeah. Was he better at 175? I don't think so. Toney excelled at 160 and 168 with his excellent boxing skills and he was still mobile enough to go get a guy (like Nunn) if he had to. He was excellent at Cruiser and Heavy where he could just baffle big plodding guys with all those shoulder rolls. I just think a very good Light Heavy like Mustafa, would be able to touch Toney with his jab from the outside and take Toney out of his game. I also think that up that high, Toney began to lose any mobility he had.

What the **** are you guys smoking?

At his best, there's no question whatsoever that Eddie was a better LHW than James, who is so comically overrated it's starting to irritate me, especially at 175 where he hardly accomplished anything and lost to the likes of Draze Thadzi.

I'd take Eddie to outbox James from a distance quite comfortably, as he was a superb technician at his best. As far as his consistency issues, are we forgetting that Toney was every bit as likely to come in out of shape or unmotivated?

We're obviously taking each fighter at their best, and I'd easily favor the best Eddie over even the very best Toney (who was hardly good enough to beat Montell Griffin) by comfortable decision. I'd also favor the other top LHW's like Galindez, Johnson, Saad Muhammad, Lopez, etc.

I don't think Toney was ever better than Eddie.he's been inconsistent at every weight he ever fought at, just as much as Eddie was.

He's certainly not technically better either.

Toney by clear cut decision. He's just a class above as a boxer.

Bull****. Eddie at his best was an exceptional fighter. A focused Eddie Mustafa Muhammad beats James Toney with relative ease.

Eddie at his best (yeah i know, a short best it was due to inspration problems lol) would handily defeat Toney. His (Eddie) average workrate will actually work against Toney's chances with the Mustafa jab filling up some of the slack in the fight and scoring points.

Nice spectacles, Pea. Toney wasn't convincingy at LHW at all. He lost two close decisions to Griffin as well after he stepped up, post Jones. He achieved nothing significant at all during his time at that weight. Infact, it was probably the worst spell of his career. So terrible that he drifted into obscurity as a world class fighter for a period of time.

Eddie's skills at LHW far exceed Toney's.

Eddie M. Muhammad is forgotten....... He was simply good..... He never was great...... Losses to "Galindez, Scott & Spinks" will haunt his ass forever....... Eddie lost when he really needed to win..... The James Toney who wasted Iran Barkley and Charles Williams at 168 pounds in 1994, would beat Eddie M. Muhammad at 175 pounds without a doubt....

    MR.BILL

    P.S.

Toney got dicked by the judges in the rematch with Monty Griffin.... That fight sucked anyway...
