Surprised this one hasn’t been done yet, who wins over 12?

Probably Tunney, he’d beat him on the outside, he has lighter feet, as long as he doesn’t choose to fight up close, he should win, but Toney beats Dempsey though.
Edit: Tunney would use his footwork to keep him off balance, control the distance and out jab him and outmanoeuvre him.

I really don’t know, I think Tunney is a better boxer than James but that doesn’t mean he wins.

Toney gets the Gibbons treatment IMO, except perhaps he lasts the distance.

Bad style match up for Toney I think Tunney uses his movement and clever boxing skills to win a fairly decisive decision.

One of the worst takes I have read. Tunney came from an era where the technical aspects were not nearly as developed as Toney's. To claim Tunney is a better boxer is outrageous considering Toney's fantastic head movement, hand speed and technique.

Not in a million years would Tunney be reduced to Jones’ play-thing like Toney was.

Tunney’s era had some of the finest technicians boxing has ever seen, including Gene himself. I think he, and well as many of his filmed contemporaries like Mike Gibbons, Tommy Loughran, Tommy Gibbons, Benny Leonard, Johnny Dundee, Midget Wolgast, Kid Chocolate, and many others I’m probably missing, would thrive today in the same way you think 40s-50s fighters would thrive. In fact, there’s a very strong argument toward the 10s-20s being a superior era to 40s-50s

Toney easily. Would see everything coming, even fat. Would be hitting harder, have better boxing fundamentals, fought better guys in a more competitive time. Tunney was excellent for his time, but technically James Toney is among the best ever and I don't need to account for any evolution in the game since.

Zero allowances for a professional fighter showing up in the state Toney did. Plenty fair, frankly. As if any Toney was going to beat Jones anyhow…

It hasn’t got a bearing on a fight when you’re talking about them on there best night… Jones fight obviously to those with eyes means nothing. It’s incredibly likely Toney beats Jones seriously? Who did he beat comparable to Toney on his best night?

I have to re-iterate the point, which was not about Toney. Not in a million years does Tunney become a ragdoll for Jones. He’s in a different class to Toney, a career slob despite his skill set & talents.
