probably because if you compared prime 3G, prime 3G is koing Fuchagami, which toney would do in his sleep..
ah so you envisage the fight being at HW where toney used roids? ok at HW 3G has zero pedigree, zero wins, can be assumed to be nothing at HW (unless its in training where he kos hws of course).
I totally agree with The Brigton Bomber. Fighting canelo like a poor man's version of toney won to gg. I think I would pick toney.
my friend you must get past this loss, do not let me find you prattling on about 10 years from now like when worst lewis stopped prime vitali in less time it took to ko7 bruno.
Just as Toney is a better version of Canelo, GGG is a better version of Jirov. Imagine if Jirov had GGG's defence and power. I think GGG would've kept it at long to mid range, something Jirov didn't do. I think that it would be an amazing fight b/c GGG's combo's are never rushed. He takes his time. They are more like single shots put together. At his best, he'd through a bunch and 5 out of six would land. GGG's jab during his prime landed at a higher percentage than anyone else's and is very powerful. With all that said though, I'd have to go with Toney by close UD.
I'm a huge fan of James Toney and Gennady Golovkin, and I've gone back and forth in my head as to who would win. But realistically speaking, since I'm someone who hates rose colored glasses, and don't buy into the idea the past generations were superior in any way shape or form to the modern generation. And that the top fighters from every era would be very competitive with one another, this would probably be a razor close match that could go either way, one thing is for certain... it goes the distance. But gun to my head, I'd lean in Gennady Golovkin's direction, via majority decision.
This surprises me. You don't buy into the idea that past generations were superior to the modern generation? Surely it has to depend on who you're looking at specifically? Why wouldn't the greats of the past be able to compete in different eras? Regarding Toney-GG it's very interesting. But their D.O.B. shouldn't have any bearing on your choice. You're trying to envisage how their styles would have meshed. And if you're still stick st that point, lean towards the guy who's more proven. As great as GG is, he's struggled with the best 2 guys he's faced, in Canelo and Jacobs. And personally, I don't think that it was anything to do with age. I just think they would always have given any version of him very tough fights. Based on that, and the fact that Toney encountered more styles and held better wins, my money would have gone on him.
As great as Toney is, he's struggled with Dave Tiberi, Sanderline Williams, Reggie Johnson, Merqui Sosa, Mike Nunn and McCallum. And personally, I don't think that it was anything to do with age. I just think they would always have given any version of him very tough fights. Based on that, and the fact that Golovkin looked untouchable until he was an age where most fighters are retired, my money would have gone on him.
Curious thing about Toney is he looked small at EVERY weight class he fought in. Maybe he's narrow boned and naturally large BMI but there was no 1 division he seemed completely happy in his own skin in, except maybe (briefly) cruiserweight. Anyway, stylistically it's made for Toney, and I think in his absolute prime he'd get a decision. Mainly because on top of his counter punching and intelligence he had a rock solid chin.
"As great as GG is, he's struggled with the best 2 guys he's faced, in Canelo and Jacobs." Although I have Toney winning , in answering your above sentence. It has to be pointed out that Canelo did avoid GGG & was on PED's there is no question Canelo had all the unfair advantages & IMO GGG won each time although 2nd may have been a draw. Jacobs & I'm a fan, also dodged the weigh in to bloat up to man handle & bully GGG ,he also had the advantages & again lost. So I cannot consider these three fights legit at all as GGG was up against crooked goings on & the trolls here ( incidentally no way do I mean Loudon at all) absolutely go orgasmic on it , but true boxing fans who covet the Marquis of Queensbury rules know what I mean . As I said ,to me Toney was a master & IMO had to much skill for GGG.
No, it was nothing to do with age. He struggled with the likes of Tiberi, because he underestimated him and he had a hectic schedule where he was fighting once every two months at the time. It happens. He struggled with Nunn, McCallum and Reggie, because they were world class fighters, who presented him with huge stylistic challenges. GG has never seen a guy like Nunn before. A tall southpaw, with a huge 77" reach, with exceptional footwork and reflexes. And he's never fight anybody as good as McCallum either. Even Canelo isn't as good as what Mike was. We've absolutely no idea how he'd have fared against those guys. Yes, he looked untouchable. But against who? That's the point. Toney is far more proven. He's encountered more styles and fought more elite competition.
