Mythical matchups are when both fighters were at theit best. So I do not see your point about Toney's inconsistency.

A lot of fighter could have beaten the out of shape version of Toney who fought jones or thadzi.

At MW, Toney was at his best when he faced Mike Mc Callum, both times. Physically, he was probably even more in shape when he fought Michael Nunn (3 pounds under the weight limit, and that for James Toney!), but he was still somewhat green then.

Overall in his career, he was at his best when he fought Iran Barkley at SMW. He was at his natural weight, in great shape and very focused. He was really on top of his game that night, and showed fantastic reflexes and hand-speed.

I like Golovkin but against Tony he would be in trouble. Golovkin does great against movers and fighters who give him distance to setup. Toney on the other hand is proficient on both the outside and inside. Tobey would just pick GGG apart in the inside and TKOs him mid/late rds.

Toney, at his best, was rarely dominant in his wins. Golovkin would likely outhustle Toney and win a UD.

Mike McCallum is much more deserving to be on that list than Golovkin.

An answer to this question might be found in the Toney-Jirov fight.

Vassily Jirov was really similar to Golovkin. I suppose many here don't remember Jirov, but he was an great fighter - he was an olympic gold medal winner, a skilled, brutal, all action come forward boxer/puncher with a good chin and heavy hands and seemingly endless stamina who was on a KO streak when he faced Toney. I guess you can say exactly the same things about Golovkin. They even come from the same country, Kazakhstan, and both moved to the US to pursue their boxing careers. I believe Jirov was on the same level as Golovkin, really a high quality fighter.

But Toney figured Jirov out and beat him in a war - based on his pure defensive skills and accurate counter punching. Toney would do the same to Golovkin.

Add to that that Jirov was the naturally bigger and stronger fighter when he faced Toney at CW... Golovkin wouldn't even be bigger than Toney at MW.

Very good post. What people seemingly forget is Toney was a master boxer. He had very good power at Middleweight, but it was his skills that made him so good. His close quarter fighting is one of the best of all time, and in terms of evading punches, he was fantastic. He made fighters like the great Holyfield, and Jirov mugs in the ring. Both were much bigger, stronger and more powerful than him. What is funny is we have people saying GGG would KO him. If Evander and bloody Jirov, who were much bigger punchers than GGG, couldn't knock him out, how the hell will he do it against a prime Toney. He isn't even bigger than Toney!!!

People need to get things in perpective and stop making GGG into some unstoppable force. If GGG got into the ring with any big punching Cruiser or HW, then he would get sparked the hell out. It was testament to Toney's great boxing skill that allowed him to beat fighters much more powerful and naturally bigger than him. He took flush punches from Samuel Peters FFS!!!

Toney wasn't scared of anybody and he had the ***** to move up all the way to HW. He is and will always be a Great. He wouldn't have no problems going up and challenging the likes of Ward or the beastly Kov. He is the real deal!

Golovkin beats that weight drained Toney at 160, Toney wins at 168.

Both fights go to judges scorecards.

The Jirov comparison to GGG is not on point in my opinion. Golovkin is much better.

I'm not disrespecting them, genius. I put him BELOW all four. If you want more separation between Golovkin and those four, then make a compelling argument for McClellan, Jackson, Pavlik, Martinez or Taylor being unshakeably above him.
