Thats the thing about fantasy matches. We will never know for sure in certain fights. I feel McClellan might have caught Toney enough and outworked Toney enough for a close decision. You note all of these people who you feel are overated but Toney also struggled with certain fighters like Sosa, R Johnson and Tiberi all being SDs and Toney when being an established world class fighter also lost to fighters like M Griffin and D Thadzi
All that you mentioned is true, however,McClellan's greatest strength was his power and there's no way on God's green earth that he's knocking Toney out.And Gerald wasn't known for his stamina either. And btw, just what victory or victories on McClellan's resume would indicate that he'd have outboxed Toney anyway-because that's what he would have to have done in order to have beaten Toney.
There isnt a victory on McClellans record that really makes me think he would have outboxed Toney, and I never said I thought he would outbox him, but I think he could possibly catch Toney enough to possibly outwork him at times, just enough to get a close decision
People seriously underrate toney’s punching power at middleweight, he had one punch knockout power, when people think of toney, they think of his shoulder roll and lying on the ropes counterpunching, but they was mainly at cw and hw, at the lower weights he’d stand in the centre ring and box, and could get on the front foot and if you watch his nunn fight, he viscously knocked out nunn, so I think toney would weather an early storm by moving around, not staying on the ropes because that would be suicide against a combination puncher like McClellan, toney wins by late ko
Toney by fairly wide UD. I disagree that the intangibles are equal. Lights Out knocked out Michael Nunn when he was 19 and competed successfully up to heavy because he was all about the intangibles. "I don't respec' no one!"
They have They have been released and you may find them on YouTube. Side note Emmanuel Steward was such a fan of James Toney it used to **** off Gerard’s that his manager and trainer like Toney that much.
I can see mclellan winning this, it depends how much damage he can do early, can he score a knockdown? Toney was great but mclellan is physically gifted
McClellan has NO chance. Yeah - I mean that. Toney in shape was a different breed. One of the most talented ever, and he took full-blown bombs from Sam Peter and Hasim Rahman, McClellan ain't hitting harder than those. Gerald is going to come forward and throw everything he has in the first few rounds then try and box if he couldn't get the KO. He's not getting the KO and he can't out-box Toney. You don't rush in on offence with no defence vs James Toney. Really the question should be can McClellan go the distance. I think he would, but Toney's body shots played a key role in his best KOs. The Nunn fight was a beautiful exhibition of body work, the Holyfield KO was from body shots, the Williams fight was an in-fight where Toney ripped his body apart. I'll give McClellan the benefit of the doubt. Toney UD12 but could stop him late.
McClellan with Manny Steward in his corner is a tough proposition not the version that faced Nigel Benn with no plan B.
