James Toney Vs. Iran Barkley

Toney would destroy Benn IMO. He would counter the **** out of him for however many rounds it lasted.

 

Barkley was almost as severely weight-drained against Toney as Toney himself was against Jones Jr.

Barkley was in his prime in the Hearns I and Olajide fights, but at his best earlier than that, in the mid-80s.

But yes, it is easily the smoothest and most skilled performance I've seen and most hailed Toney as lb4lb #1 ahead of Whitaker after this performance.


Benn was made for James with his wide right hooks. Made for him.

Eubank bags the early rounds with his jab and lateral movement (Toney was flat-footed), before Toney outworks him down the stretch by countering with head and body combos as Chris gets sloppier.

Watson would struggle because Watson was a fighter who liked to tuck up and counter in combinations, but Toney rarely initiated and had shorter, sneakier, quicker punches than Watson and mixed in body shots more.

 

Whilst this was a straightforward fight for James, the general ignorance on Barkley in this thread from some is embarrassing. He was a very dangerous Middleweight in a truly fantastic era for the weight.

Kalambay would've taken the **** out of Toney years before Roy did if he'd had the chance.

Barkley was the betting favourite actually and all the experts picked Iran to beat James

 

got the sky sports version of this fight.

carl thompson afterwards is really dismissive of eubank's chances against toney. :yep
