Before the McCallum fights LaMotta would have a very good shot at beating Toney- logically he would be the favorite, I think. The McCallum fights were the birth of "James Toney", if that makes sense.
I’ve got this crazy hunch that this one somehow goes the distance. I went with Toney, who I think is more skilled defensively and when in shape seemed to handle strong pressure fighters pretty well. I’d also suggest that this bout would have best been made at around 165 pounds. Both struggled with weight and LaMotta often fought at or around that mark even when facing welterweights who were moving up and giving away 10+ pounds.
I think Toney is better defensively , can counter beautifully ,and has a good ring I.Q. but Toney was not really a mover so he'll be in front of Jake. I'm picking Lamotta by a close SD. Usually I'd go with a fighter like Toney in this kind of matchup but Lamotta is going to be there for all 15 rounds and while Toney could be very slick , as others have pointed out he was better at 168 than at middleweight and I think Lamotta's constant pressure will win the later rounds. Now this being said, I would have zero confidence in betting on this fight either way and I sure could be wrong.
Man, you could go a few ways with this, but the one certainty is if the Toney who showed up against Tiberi enters the ring, he's taking a shellacking. LaMotta would be a horrid man to meet on a night like that.
I pick Toney to take this. I also think his counter rt hand over the top would rattle LaMotta throughout the fight.
If I had footage of Lamotta vs Hudson I'd post it here. The point being that h2h match ups are based around the best versions of the fighters. Not their worse performances.
This is a tough one to pick. I wouldn't put money on it. Both of these fighters had a lot of close calls. Both could be lackadaisical. Both these fighters could be lazy and not throw enough punches at times. If Jake was on, and went all out, he could win a decision. Both had great chins so I see this going the distance. In a close decision win, I guess I'll go with Toney.
