If Toney fought to the best of his ability at 168 there is no way Calzaghe would have beaten him.

I'm talking about what he was capable of doing if his mind was 100% focused on the job.

What a ****ing stupid thread, why ask the question of who would win if you was slagging Calzaghe from the start calling him a "girl" and saying he would lose?
The answer to your question is Calzaghe KO round 1. :hey

So we can have a prime toney but a prime calzaghe (not ****ed up china hands joe) has no power to hurt him?
If you make it a prime joe (give him 100% healthy hands) its not all about the 'slaps'.

I don't understand the "prime Joe" comments people keep talking about. You mean the guy who fought nobody early in his career, got a shady decision over Robin Reid, and showed nothing special when facing fighters who themselves were not special. The inconsistant Calzaghe. That compared to the recent Calzaghe who clearly beat Kessler, wiped the floor with Lacy, and actually beat a great fighter in Hopkins (still counts as great even at 43). Fine. The calzaghe who didn't slap but threw hard shots against prime Toney. Sam Peter landed everything he could on a way past his best Toney, and James didn't go anywhere. You think Joe hits hard enough to hurt him. All this would do is take away some of Joe's activity level and speed. It doesn't help him. Focused Toney is all-around more skilled and more talented than Calzaghe. I don't care if you love Calzaghe and hate Toney, there is no disputing that. He knocked out Michael Nunn, brutalized Iran Barkley, beat Mike Mccalum, Vasili Jirov, and ran over John Ruiz in more dominant style than RJJ. Tell me a fighter Joe has fought who even is half as good as a prime Toney. Kessler? he's a solid fighter, but too slow and to predictable to be compared to Toney. He also doesn't hit any harder.

When he fought Sam Peter he was 100lbs heavier than SMW :rofl if he was 168lbs fighting Sam Peter he woulda been carried out of the arena.

Calzaghe's movement would have given James Toney fits. As great a counterpuncher as James is - a guy that could move in and out like Calzaghe would outpoint him over the course of the fight - ala Roy Jones jr.'s 168 lb championship earning victory over James Toney.

DAMN you people hate Joe Calzaghe.

Toney was an inconsistent performer who showed he suffered against fast movers with faster handspeed than him.

Joe Calzaghe at his prime, was far faster than he's shown at any point after the second beating he gave Mario Veit.

Calzaghe also hit harder than anyone wants to give him credit for, with Eubank showing the same "type" of chin that Toney showed, yet Eubank being hit down in the first round by Calzaghe.

Calzaghe is just too smart, too crafty and too fast to be suckered in by Toney, who had his best years when he was the craftier, smaller fighter with more handspeed.

Quite frankly, Calzaghe trumps him in every aspect, including power, prime for prime.

Don't believe me? Check their KO ratios.

    God you're a ****ing idiot.

The only dodgy thing about the Reid decision was the fact that it wasn't a UD to Calzaghe. Reid got beaten 8 rounds out of 12 in that fight.

Second thing, Most of the guys you're talking about for Toney were not in their prime or came on the back of Toney taking steroids.

Third Thing, "Calzaghe beat no one" - I'd take Eubank over Toney at 168, let alone Calzaghe over Toney.

Prime for prime, meaning the best version of each? James Toney clear UD. Too skilled, too good a counter puncher, too accurate, too good defensivley, and too relaxed. His hands were very fast @ 168 as well.

If Toney was fit and focused he would dismantle Calzaghe. Even though Toney has had a really good career, he could've achieved so much more with a better attitude, he was so talented. Everyone remembers Jones Jr's win over John Ruiz, but no-one seems to see the merit in Toney moving from middleweight to heavyweight and not only beating one highly mediocre guy severely lacking in firepower, but regularly competing against genuinely top heavyweights over a sustained period of time even at his current age. Remember the first fight v Sam Peter? Would Calzaghe or even Jones Jr have ever even thought of touching that one? At 168 Toney would've been too strong, too smart for Joe.

Yes and Calzaghe never lost and therefore he must be the greatest.

At least he bothered to get in the ring with someone in their prime and A+. I'll give credit for someone who does that and loses, all day, over what Calzaghe did and is still doing.

Doesnt Matter waht ANY OF YOU THINK, because Joe is on top of the world because he is a DISCIPLINED CHAMPION, while fat ass punch drunk ignorant Phoney is fighting for peanuts on BEST DAMN SPORT SHOW. u can say how great toney could have been, and he could have. but because of his own laziness he now SUCKS, and threw away a ton of oppurtunity.
