James Toney wasn't expected to beat Michael Nunn, but he did.

James Toney wasn't expected to beat Vassily Jirov, but he did.

People should realize that cream rises to the top.

An absolute peak, fit and motivated James Toney would not lose to Joe Calzaghe. He was simply on a different skill level to Calzaghe.

Toney would probably have trouble with Calzaghe's movement for the first couple of rounds, but he would realize this and begin to draw Calzaghe onto him and counter him with poise and accuracy.

    Toney 8-4.

"Absolute peak" Calzaghe would beat any version of Toney.

    10-2, 11-1, 11-1.

I think that the first judge is biased in favor of Toney.

I think in general your 'cream rises to the top' theory is something people should apply more, thats a good point you make, however in this instance i disagree.

It didn't often apply with Toney though, and even at his very best I don't think Toney was any better than Calzaghe to be honest.

Calzaghe UD 7-5. James Toney may be a great counterpuncher but he is too immobile and Calzaghe would score at will. Toney's accuracy and quickness would make it close.

im pretty sure toney would win. mb fight would be bit like jirov vs toney. both JC and VJ southpaws with high work rate. Toneys D and counterpunching would buffer the workrate and mb he cn stop calzaghe.
