I know he was. I recall him losing to Tiozzo. But thats not SMW. Just look at fighters like G Johnson who was competitive at MW and world champ at LHW but only a journeyman at SMW, which tells you how divisions are different.
Look at how Toney wasnt effective at LHW as an example also.
Why do you feel McCallum was less effective against Tiozzo? Age or the fact that different divisions can make a difference especially when fighting fighters natural to the weight

run run run like calzaghe from froch and dawson AND GLEN JOHNSON

yeah no wonder glen didn't get to win a title at smw when joe ran in fear from him and sven cheated him.

but no such gibbering cowardzaghes or cheats at LHW that's why glen managed to briefly win a title there.

Me too, at SMW at least. Toney would catch Calzaghe a few good times, but forget about getting a rhytm going. I'm not convinced Calzaghe would be able to hang at LHW with hard hitters. Victories over ancient but still game Hopkins and faded Jones Jr proves little.

Based on Calzaghe's fights with Mitchell and Brewer. Williams would finished the job:deal

Have a look where Mike was when James beat him.

He was getting on, but he was still a great fighter. He'd beaten Herol just three years earlier. He'd beaten Collins and Watson just two years earlier. He'd beaten Kalambay and had drawn with Toney just one year before their rematch.

Hopkins had good wins against Tarver and Wright before Joe had beaten him, but he'd also lost two fights to Jermain Taylor three years earlier.

Both Mike and Bernard were great fighters.

And as you've noted, Joe was much older than Toney was when he beat Mike.

But taking everything into consideration, in my opinion, Toney's win over Mike was still better.

I also think Mike was a better fighter than Bernard was, but Bernard obviously has great longevity.

    Happy new Year!

    :good

I make lights out the favourite but toney was very lazy it wouldn't shock me to see joe simply out working him

I agree here. Toney is one of my all time favorites but wasn't 100% dependable to be at his best. Calzaghe wouldn't take this fight light and come prepared.

    Would've been a great matchup.
