Spinks that beat Ali vs James Toney at 190lbs and heavyweight, this is Spinks that beat Ali at 190lbs and heavyweight, he just loses a few pounds to make 190lbs, but it’s the same version of Spinks. Who wins this matchup at each weight? 190lbs: Heavyweight:
The Spinks that beat Ali vs the Toney that beat Jirov would be fun as hell. I'm going to take Leon in this one via a decision. When Leon was in shape and sober as he was in the Ali fight, he would be very hard for Toney to discourage. I believe Toney would absolutely have his moments counterpunching the ultra aggressive Spinks but ultimately Leon outwork him. Again, this is the absolutely best version of Leon against a Toney that is fighting above his best weight. Toney is the better fighter pound for pound without question.
Toney would beat Leon up, Leon would look busy but he’d be being countered like hell. Ali let “Neon” win that I’m almost certain of, Neon ain’t getting the stoppage and he ain’t outboxing the master James Toney.
Do you think the Leon Spinks that beat Ali is better than Vassily Jirov? Jirov gave Toney a hell of a fight but clearly lost. Leon is always tough to evaluate because of his substance abuse which led to wildly different performances. Some interesting stats, Leon threw 943 punches against Ali and landed 419 punches at 44.4 percent completion. Jirov threw 1023 punches against Toney but only landed 243 for a 22 percent completion. Jirov Vs Toney was 12 rounds while Spinks Ali I was 15. Leon was far more accurate against Ali who was clearly in decline but still good enough to beat Shavers and Evangelista a few months before. It's a very intriguing fight for sure. I'm not 100 percent convinced either way.
I’ll stick with my first conviction but advise you watch Jirov vs Toney in slow motion, Toney won bigger then the cards suggest.
I had it 117-109 for Toney. A wide decision but a really tough fight. It was one of those fights that Toney was clearly winning rounds but Jirov still had plenty of moments. I see Leon as a far more skilled fighter than Jirov. I thi
