James Toney vs Rocky Marciano @190lbs 15 rounds

I think Toney counters the daylights outta the Rock and wins a decisive decision.

I think Toney would be made to pay the price for his penchant for coasting for stretches & eventually wear down under Marciano's immense power & relentless attack.

 

Jirov threw over a 1000 punches vs Toney and held up pretty well under that pressure.

The Toney who fought Holyfield or Jirov would out point Marciano in a competitive fight. The skill level gap between the two would be very apparent Toney's smoother boxing, counter punching, better defence, better handspeed would be the difference. Marciano would keep it competitive with his willingness and workrate but overall Toney would take it via decision.

 

Marciano was a skilled boxer who James Toney could learn a thing or two from.

 

James' coasting for stretches was when he was killing himself, to make weight, in order for the retention of his middleweight/super middle weight titles.

He would punish Marciano

 

Love Toney but the swarmer-puncher just outworks the boxer.

Jirov's punches didn't carry the same freakish power that Marciano's did.

I think Toney would ultimately get the same treatment as Moore, except he may be sturdy enough to last the distance.

That's kinda how I see it as well, Toney will counter Rocky very effectively but I don't think he can hurt Marciano and to paraphrase Archie Moore ,"ya gotta be able to hurt him to keep him off." and if Toney can't, rounds 10 through 15 would be a nightmare for Toney

 

I know Holyfield was past it but Toney did considerably hurt Holyfield and stop him and Holyfield was never stopped again in his career. Marciano was decked by Light Heavyweights so I do think Toney could get his attention.

Toney was naturally bigger than Moore he played American Football before he was boxer and weighed 200 pounds he had more mass than Moore and he was more durable IMO.

Would Marciano's workrate and physical strength be enough to overcome Toney ? Possibly. But I think Toney in peak form could decision Marciano.

As for Jirov's power he hit pretty hard especially to the body he had 32 stoppages in 38 wins and he basically ended Joe Mesi's career at Heavyweight.
