Toney tried to copy Walcott but never was anywhere so good as the original. We know what Marciano did to him.

I don't think he was at his best in the Peter fights, either, but my point was, that he admitted that Peter hit him the hardest and hurt him (I think I'm recalling correctly).

I also think the opposite is true; Toney is tailor made for Marciano- he stands still and relies on slips and parries for defense. To survive Marciano, you either need to have good wheels and use them, or overpower him and outpunch him (theoretically speaking).

Toney isn't doing either of those two things.

Toney never fought ANYBODY as destructive as Marciano..and as has been noted before me...Rocky would just keep landing on any available target...most forearms, until Toney crumbles.

Good match up ... Toney has great defense, counter punching and an iron chin .. he lacks the power to seriously hurt Rocky .. I see Rocky coming on from behind to win a decision based on stamina and punch output ...

I'm not your typical Marciano wag who thinks he defeats the best of the modern superheavies...

However, at below 200 (or against a guy who should be below 200), he is hard to pick against. Marciano is almost exclusively an inside fighter by any standard due to his reach. He punches far harder on the inside than Peter (unless you include repeated rabbit punches) and with far more workrate. Like I said, if you're gonna be small against Marciano, you better be quick on your feet and provide a lot of lateral, not just shoulder rolls and leaning at the waist. That's a recipe for getting blasted.

I have great respect for Toney but in those 80 fights he never fought a heavyweight nearly as good as Marciano (a shot Holyfield does not count).

Toney took what Walcott had and then improved on it. Technically he is much sounder than the fighters in the 40's.

I don't agree with this at all. Additionally, Walcott was an immeasurably better physical specimen, better conditioned, more physically talented.

Dont know why people think Toney would crumble so easily from taking shots from an extremely small heavyweight like Marciano, Toney's never looked like crumbling before, he's never been stopped, people are just saying this would be a destruction because Marciano is an old fighter.

I'd fancy Marciano to take a wide decision, outworking Toney like ****, but give James some credit he has a granite chin and wouldnt just crumble like some of you are saying.

Not at all. Walcott had better footwork, more dimension to his game, more power, was a better ring general, better at feinting. Toney had more durability and nearly matches him with his upperbody movement and beats him with steroid use but overall Walcott is just the much better fighter in everything. Especially at hw.

I can only conceive of comparing Toney (HW) and Walcott in the way of being slick and crafty. The similarities end there, though. Walcott had different strengths and weaknesses.

I think this might parallel the 1st Charles /Marciano fight with Toney building an early lead only to have Marciano take the play away in the middle rounds and commence a steady pounding on Toney who will go into survival mode. I agree that Toney is too tough and slippery for Marciano to KO but Toney will be very happy to hear the final bell so he can go home and soak his head and body in a tub of ice water. Marciano UD.

I see it 60 to 40 for Marciano

Toney has better chin than JJW and Charles and faced some good bangers at HW. I think that he won't be able to keep Rocky of him for the whole fight, but he lands his fair share of counters that would cut Marciano. Still I think that Rocky's stamina, durability and aggressivnes earn him a 15 round UD or 12 round MD.

  14. toney would outbox rocky, during all the fight, james would be the winner on the cards hands down, but rocky would do pressure during all the fight, he would catch toney late . tko in 11 rounds.

Ali complained after his "fight" with the Rock, about how sore his arms and body were from the accidental shots Marciano hit him with.

Rocky had very heavy hands and anyone who stands in front of him will be in trouble.
