What is the deal with their fight, the full story. Yes i know that Roy Jones Junior out boxed James Toney for 12 rounds, but i see people and i have heard that James Toney had some serious issue's before the fight..?
there are several rumors/legends associated with this fight one is that toney had to lose 20 lbs in a week to make the limit another is that he was so distraught after that fight he threatened to shoot his manager jackie kellan (this is from ring magazine)
It's true that Toney had trouble making weight. But it has been proven through his entire career that he has had trouble with weight. Even in a division where there is no limit. So that excuse wears thin. But it is true about the anger he felt towards his manager following the fight. There was a huge TV deal riding on him beating Jones and Kallen was foolish enough to blurt out this fact during the bout in the ****ing corner between rounds. Toney resented that greatly and took it to mean she didn't give a **** about him.
Supposedly it was weight issues, as is usually the case with Toney. If he couldn't get up for that kind of superfight in the prime of his career, that's his problem. He didn't look to be at his best for the fight, but that had just as much to do with Roy as it did with weight-draining IMO. Toney at his best may've taken a few rounds rather than get embarassed and shut out as he did in their actual encounter, but he still loses handily.
Im ****ing sick of people and fighters using "weight issues" as a reason for a loss, if someones dumb ass can't get his lazy ass to the gym to train for an important fight, than that's his problem. Jones whipped Toney's ass 6 ways from Sunday, in that fight, it looked more like a sparring session than a close fight..
I take this view. I think his condition may not have been at it's peak. But he wasn't a wreck. Plus the style contrast was stark. That had a lot more to do with how Toney lost.
I recently recorded the fight on the vs channel legends of the ring ..They have an interview with Arum who I think was either Toney's promoter or Roy's at the time ..And he explained in full detail all of Toney's weight problems ..The man could not stick to a proper diet ..In no way can you blame weight for that loss because going into to it Toney stated he was in great shape ! Its only after Jones hands him his ass is this brought up .. Sounds famliar Pavlik fans :huh
