well you figure if Toney was able to pressure Nunn into defeat, he'd do the same to Leonard

Leonard could handle pressure but at a controlled pace (see the Hagler fight)

but push him too fast and he starts to crumble not only physically but mentally

no knock on leonard. still a great fighter (makes the top 50-100 all time)

The problem with Toney is he was a very susceptible to being lulled asleep. He wasn't an aggressive fighter, and the shot he landed against M.Nunn was completely out the blue. Nunn was winning that fight handily. I can see Toney not pressing Leonard and waiting for the counter. Leonard using his speed and smarts use flashy combinations the last minute or so of each rd stealing rd after rd, before Toney would realize it the fight would be over with a Leonard dec win. Same way he defeated the much more aggressive Hagler . When Hagler finally got in gear he was behind on the cards and had given Leonard the confidence he could win.... I thought for sure when that fight started I thought Hagler would go at Leonard the way he went at Hearns. (And he should've, he should've made Leonard fight from the 1st minute of the 1st rd pushed him hard and early) but when he came out passive, and started jabbing with Leonard, I thought Leonard could win this fight and he did.

Leonard waits until Toney eats his way out of the middleweight division, and then offers him a match at 154.

Haven't seen the fight in yrs. I could be mistaken. But I can see Leonard beating Toney the way I described.

Maybe Leonard can win a SD but not a bad idea to rewatch Toney-Nunn

Leonard. Speed kills and Leonard would be too fast. Toney would have his moments but Leonard in the end.

James in 1991 vs. Ray in 1987? I would have to go with James by late knockout. I don't know why. Just my gut feeling.

Nonsense about landing out of the blue. Nunn won the early rounds on volume with Toney countering through out to the body. By about round 7 on the body work got to him and started putting a beating on Nunn https://imgur.com/gallery/ccwN4

Toney had blistering hand speed but lead feet. Sugar was just a tad faster with his hands but James carried way better power at 160.

Ray Leonard by decision. He would out quick and out hustle Toney. Shoe shines and showey flurries carry the day.
