James Toney vs. the best middleweights - super middle weights of the past 50 years, excluding active fighters.

How does Toney do vs. the following?

Roy Jones, Benard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe, Marvin Hagler and Carlos Monzon?

To be fair to all fighters, we will limit the action to 12 rounds.

Take the poll and if you care list the name you think he would beat. Assume all these fights happen when both are in their prime.

    My call.

The way I see it, we did see Toney vs Roy Jones and it wasn't close. Jones via wide UD. Nothing changes here.

Hopkins vs Jones will be interesting, however I think Hopkins is just too tall and long for Toney, who was out jabbed by the decent jabbers he fought, and Hopkins defense would limit Toney's clean counters. Hopkins via split decision.

Calzaghe is simply too quick and active for Toney to tame in addition to being hard catch up with or floor period. Calzaghe UD

Hagler is simply too good to lose to Toney, and if Toney wanted to brawl he would probably lose via TKO late.

Monzon vs. Toney to me is interesting, Yes Monzon is bigger and would score with his straight shots, but he's not exactly fast or defensive, which gives Toney a chance to shine. This fight in some ways might be similar to McCallum vs Toney, but I said primes here and I think everyone would agree Monzon was better than the 35 year old McCallum. No miracle come from behind KOs for Toney here, but I do think he make a good showing on a points loss.

So I have Toney 0-5 but do see a path for 1-4.

How, Joe would throw and land far more and is hard to catch up to and hit? Toney could not count on Calzaghe tiring at all and probably lacks the one punch power to turn the tides.

    Wins: Hopkins and Calzaghe
Loses: Jones and Hagler and probably Carlos by close decision.

Toney's best chances are Monzon, Hopkins and Hagler. All would be close fights. I don't think Calzaghe's workrate, feints and speed works well for him.

I think Monzon is his best chance for a win. Slower, more predictable, lower workrate. Monzon isn't getting his jab off on Toney and he's going to pay with counters when he throws it. ##

Hopkins-Toney is a 50-50. Toney is slicker, faster with more skill. Hopkins has very decent skills himself and has more stamina

Hagler-Toney - Toney has the skill and speed advantage. Hagler has the advantages in stamina, workrate and pressure. Would be a very close fight. If Duran is pushing Hagler to the wire, Toney does better.

The fight with Monzon is a difficult one.I see Carlos being vulnerable to Toney’s over hand right as he pulls straight back from punches.Toney also has more speed.I think over 15 rounds I favor Monzon.Over 12 rounds, this could go either way in my opinion

Someone probably picked Toney to beat GGG and now Mendoza hates him.

Toney was at thug like PED drug cheat with racy mouth. He once grabbed a gun and threatened to kill his manager. He sold drugs. Why exactly should anyone like him?

Moving on I do think he was a hall of fame middle weight, and I'm matching him here vs the best five retired fighters from 160-168.

It could be an interesting thread. One poster thinks he tops Monzon, and the thread isn't even a 1/2 old.

Toney would probably just go to the ropes and make Joe come to him. As far as throwing more, possibly. Landing more is a doubtful. James breaks him down over the distance. Doubt either gets stopped. Chances are it ends up annoying and controversial.
