He has much better technique.Must be the best technician on the inside ever.these short punches would get there first

 

Better technique over Burley, Marshall, Williams, Cocoa Kid, Booker, Chase, Wade and Lytell? In some ways yes. But his activity level was the issue. Never saw Willams on film, I hear he was very fast.

 

Yep.I do not think there was ever a better technician on the inside than James Toney.James watched the tapes of these old school fighters all the time and improved on it.I do not see anybody beating Toney on the inside.

 

Charles and Moore beat him

 

Toney was pretty vulnerable at middleweight. I would definitely favor Charles and Williams over him, probably Burley, too.

 

I'd bet that quite a few old timers like Papke could outfight him on the inside.

 

Papke would be a sucker for the uppercut-left hook combo of Toney.This would not have ended well for him.

 

But what would Toney do with Papke wrestling and mauling tactics?

 

A lot of fighters tried to maul Toney, on the insight, nobody succeeded.That would actually make it worse, watch Delgado-Toney.Technique prevails.
