James Toney vs these pressure fighters

Add Prince Williams who gave Toney a terrific fight. But Toney preserved his energy and separated himself from Williams in the latter rounds, similar to the Jirov fight actually.

 

Good call. One of Toney's greatest strengths was his ability to relax in the ring. He usually was the stronger man later in fights because he wouldn't burn out all of his energy and he was so defensively sound.

 

I don't know much about Jirov so I cannot comment, nor have I seen the fight with . I think Jake would not go anywhere all night and wear Toney down enough to gain a slight lead. (Possibly) Jake is not the favourite by a longshot just what I see as the best fighter on the list. (IMO)

 

I agree that Jake has the best shot against Toney at his best, in a 15 rounder middleweight contest. A better shot than Calzaghe at 168. I just feel that at 168 Toney was at his very best (Barkley version). At 160 Toney was still a bit raw.

 

No it was completely close.

 

Calzaghe was a lot better than Brkley, he was faster, harder to hit and had faster hands.

 

It was not close go watch it again

 

Toney would make a great 15 round fighter

 

You should check out the Toney vs Jirov fight. It truly is a modern classic. Toney was fighting for his career and Jirov coming into the fight was an unbeaten badass that had won Olympic good a few years earlier against Tarver. It was an absolute war!

 

Yep. I thought Tiberi won that fight. But I am assuming we are talking about the best versions of both guys. Toney was horribly weight drained against Tiberi and moved up after that fight. Actually, both Lamotta and Toney have multiple losses to lesser guys due to struggling with weight. Both were similar in that regard and fought down to their competition at times.
