Here's a skinny mantis: http://www.phillyboxinghistory.com/more/pahof/inductees/inductee_tiberi_dave.htm Think Toney could beat him?
Dave tiberi was a pressure fighter. And was 5'10 and weighed betwenn 168 and 160 pounds all his career he was in his prime at mw. Hearns was a 6'1 147-154 spaguetti in his prime .Nice try
I knew that you'd see that I was right. If Toney couldn't even keep a skinny dude like Tiberi off him, who had less punching power than a bag of fleas, Hearns' power would have been ATOMIC.
At MW it's a toss up, but 175 was the lowest point in Toney's career up until he aged too much. Tommy had some very good performances at 175 though, so I pick him to win there.
Hearns had slowed down at 175 enough for Toney to beat him.Tommy was stationary at that weight. At 175, Toney was no different than at any other weight, he just got robbed a few times.
Eh? It is totally irrelevant and incoherent... The hitting power has nothing to do with pressure...btw Toney would take the shots from hearns without Blink
Toney was a very skilled fighter. Probably top 10-20 in the skills dept last 30 yrs. But, we got to consider before he got starched M.Nunn was giving Toney a boxing lesson. He was out worked by M.Griffith twice, same Griffith that R.Jones annihilated in less than a rd 2 fights later,(and the 1st fight he won against Jones was a bogus dq, but understandable.) 3 wins against M.Mccallum, 02 are debatable. Almost shut out against R.Jones, And a very debatable win against the great D.Tiberi.(And their was nothing special about Tiberi) I can see Hearns landing a few hard right hands early in the fight, gain Toneys respect, pepper him with that excellent jab, keep him defensive minded, cruise to a dec. Sure Toney had the ability to beat Hearns. But would he have the dedication and will power too?
Toney not only would win but he would by stoppage and badly. Sorry if i hurt the feelings of the spaguetti fans
Hearns was a greater fighter than Toney. Hearns best weights were 147 and 154. but Hearns in shape and not moving up and down like he did when he fought at 160 might have been better for Hearns. When he fought at middleweight I don't think he had 3 fights in a row at that weight. Let's say he fought at middleweight for 3 years and 10 fights. Then I think Hearns at middleweight gets better. That thing about jumping around getting titles sort of hurt him in getting comfortable at any weight. Hearns was so great he could still do it and win but if you see how much he moved up and down. March 86 middleweight Shuler, June 86 Medal at 154.. Oct.. 86 Dewitt middleweight. March 87 light heavyweight. Oct 1987 160 Roldan.. June 88 160 Barkley. Nov. 88 Kinchen 168 so why he kept going up and down and all around I don't get it.
Agree. That jab of Hearns would be there in Toney`s face all night. A boxer like Toney is gonna give Hearns the time and room to box and pick his shots. James Toney would fight in spurts and its possible he could land something big I dont think its the most likely result. Toney is gonna have to respect Hearns power as well.
At 175 pounds, Hearns was not mobile. Toney can slip that jab and get on the inside where he is way more effective.
