Good to see him that lean. BUt as has been said, his ship has sailed. But I think he probably could get a few more decent paydays fighting the lower rung of the top twenty.
At CW I don't think anyone ****s with James. Skill wise no one can move with Toney and even though he's slower and older the instinct is still blazin inside of him. He's a fighter through and through.....a motivated James is a major problem for anyone at HW and definitley at CW. Glad to see James back in fighting shape.
I agree Toney is a really a bonafide old school technician, and his skills are (were) amazing to watch. But at heavyweight, the bigger guys, like the K Bros, and probably even Haye, Chagaev, and possibly Povetkin all would be too much for even a motivated Toney in his mid to late 30s as he was when he fought Ruiz. ANd a 40 or 41 year old Toney gets eaten alive by the heavies today.
The physical disadvantage is just too much at HW. I agree. Before I though he he had a chance b/c no one could really see him on a pure boxing level. Intelligence wise James was far beyond anyone else...but I think if he gets down to 200 and stays in shape...I think he rejuvinates his career to where he can add to his ever impressive legacy.
he might look good, but he will be weakened fighting so low. James never could lose and be effective.
Looks like he went through a few steroid cycles, but this time with someone that knew what he was doing. Against top 5 heavies he doesn't have a chance, but CW is wide open for the taking.
Personally, I think that's his next bout... Chris Arreola. Same promoter and Chris has already beat nearly every other heavy in that stable of fighters.
Way to go JT, waste your youth, (you know the time when you could've actually made some noise) as a fat ass, then get in shape when you're in your 40s.
Yeah I thinks it is too late, but if Toney were were about 34 or 35, and in shape, I'd favor him over everyone outside of the Klits.
Except that he was a pretty great Middleweight in his youth. He was already 35 when he stepped up to Heavyweight.
