To boost recovery I imagine rather than to look like a beach muscle head. Toney's interviews after the Jirov and Holyfield fights are classic. What a character
I don't understand you lads, Toney was abysmal at heavyweight. This was where his footwork which was always his weakest suit was REALLY ****ing bad. Even Sam Peter was pinning him down. Because he's just not a heavyweight, in any way shape or form. Forget what he even did, he didn't look the same at heavyweight. His toughness and willingness to compete there is admirable though. At cruiser he was pretty good though. He wasn't too fat there, he still had speed, very good speed for the weight class.
BOLD: Agreed. But it was always his ability to take the **** when someone was coming at him or had pinned him down that showed his upper body ability and full arsenal. At Cruiser, Jirov pinned him down constantly. And yes, he looked quality there. But he gave Peter a good go twice. And past his best or not, beating Holyfield up as he did, in a very good performance after a slow start, is a quality win for a fat ex-middleweight. LINED: The above is what makes this all the more impressive IMO. Toney is an old timer. Had some patches of inconsistency, but got through on sheer natural fighting ability and toughness when he really shouldn't have. Still never been finished. And could've done so much more, probably. And that win over Nunn can never be taken away from him :deal
I agree, its that old school in him that let him compete at heavy. Just don't think he ever looked good there really. Good considering what he is, essentially a podgy light heavy/cruiser even at that stage of his career, but not actually good. I mean Jirov pinned him down yeah, but Jirov was actually good. Underrated. Known for his immense output. Sam Peter is woeful.
Agree with Jirov in relation to Peter (which is why that is also a very good win, the fact it's a quality, dramatic fight with a high output southpaw against, well, James Toney, makes it a good gauge in general IMO), but as a physical obstacle, and in terms of his reputation at the time, Peter was a tough fight for him. And isn't it the first fight where he actually makes a good run of it? I'll post it and re-watch at work tomorrow, see if I'm mixing it up with summat else :thumbsup [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y4v3DXC3hY[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37hfEAlGVkg&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-6k-sUPv6w&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnoa2FXp7nI&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nekLAZCjzYI&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DXy4n8mA7M&feature=related[/ame] The fact he didn't get maimed is in itself impressive, when you think of his ring years, fighting weight and the fact he had a big lump in front of him, which is what you're getting at as well I guess (credit for toughness but not performance) I just put a lot of worth in that kinda' stuff, probably why people think I'm anal when it comes to rankings
Mandz dropped the youtube in this thread i think...........and i bet anyone watching it is not even comparing.........simply captivated. Am guessing its the one i saw when i was in ma ****struck zone (cpl moons back).............and with all respect to whoever said it, the term old skool given his modus is insulting.

I was laughing at the fact I didn't understand it. Not laughing at something which I didn't understand :nut
