Why do people think of him so highly? What top notch guy has he beaten (or come close to beating) that warrants him having even the slightest chance of beating a wladimir klitschko or david haye.

-He ran up an undefeated record coming into the Roy Jones JR fight facing nobodies.
-He got ABSOLUTELY owned by RJJ (winning only 1-3 rounds on all scorecards)
-He LOST TO MONTEL GRIFFIN...TWICE!!! ARE U KIDDING ME
-He beats a shitload of no namers, junk boxers...Then he beats a 41 year old Holyfield.
    -Beats boring man John Ruiz

Im just wondering, cuz I just don't see his strong appeal u guys have to him, or how his fights (close one w/ rahman, and 2 losses to sam peter) warrant a shot at klitschko or even haye.

Because he fought frequently his whole career and came to fight each and every time, even against guys like Samuel Peter. Impressive considering he's a former middleweight.

He fought frequently...That makes him ATG?

He's never beat a top notch boxer in his career.

Michael Nunn- Two division world champion was thought to be top 2 P4P in the world at the time Toney beat him. And Toney is the only person to ever stop him. And was THE man at 160 when Toney beat him.

Reggie Johnson- Two division champ. Tough southpaw. Has beatin the likes of Steve Collins and Julio Ceasar Gonzalez.

Mike McCallum(twice)- ATG fighter slightly past his prime. If you don't know who he is you shouldn't call yourself a boxing fan.

    Doug DeWitt- Former world champion.

Iran Barkley- Three division world champion. Beat Tommy Hearns twice.

Tim Littles- Young up and comer. Toney knocked him out while his eye was pouring blood. Little was coming off a win over future champion Frankie Liles and contender John Scully.

Prince Charles Williams- Former Light Heavyweight champion.

Was robbed both times against Montell Griffin.

Beat mostley nobodies for a few years beat a few decent fighters like Adolpho Washington, Steve Little, Anthony Hembrick, Freddie Delgado and an old Mike McCallum. Then beat Jason Robinson for a shot at Jirov.

Vassily Jirov- 31-0 at the time and was considered the best fighter at Crusierweight after Juan Carlos Gomez moved to heavy and is still consider top 10 one of the greatest Crusierweights of all time. Toney went to war and beat him in a great fight.

Evander Holyfield- Still only person since Bowe to even come close to stopping him.

John Ruiz- roids or not he still whooped Ruiz's ass.

Got robbed against Peter the first time and then tonight he slapped Rahman around.

You should really do your homework before you ask stupid ****in questions.

    I GOT MILK BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess Michael Nunn, Reggie Johnson, Mike McCallum (3X), Iran Barkley, Vassily Jirov, Evander Holyfield, and John Ruiz don't count; oh yeah and was champ in every division he's fought in. Besides the fact that he beat everybody and their momma.... he won't have any friends in the afterlife cuz he whooped on all of the ancestor's children:yep

David Haye??? Toney has done a whole lot more in the heavyweight division than David Haye has.

Well, he beat them right but you should mentioned that McCallum was past his prime on all three oaccasions, only slightly the first time though, that Holyfield was 100years old and far away from his prime when he fought him and that he got DQed against Ruiz because of roids. Still good wins but they should be put into perspective.

Out of the list i only consider McCallum and Holyfield as a lock for beeing atg. Nunn, who isn´t even near beeing a top10 all-time mw imo, and Jirov could be discussed as atgs but at least are locks for the hof, as is Barkley and Ruiz could also be discussed of belonging there - just look what he achieved that´s more than some of the guys who are already in there.

So, Toney is an atg but there were better and more successful fighters in his generation.

Toney was also the beneficiary of two terrible decisions over Dave Tiberi and Reggie Johnson. Tiberi ran him out of the ring and Toney almost collapsed at the end of the fight he was so spent. One of the least-publicized, all-time robberies IMO.

Damn. Should at least watch some James Toney on Youtube before being so critical of him. His fight with Jirov was a fight that really showcases his ability as a boxer.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66qLo0fVyxg&feature=related

He's probably the slowest guy that could ever be called slick. What natural ability does he have? I'd say he has one natural ability which is his durability. Everything else he brings to the ring is skill and intellect. Watch that clip and you can see instances of him opting to take lesser shots to trade big ones, his ability to avoid damage by rolling with and away from punches, using angles on his punches to catch Jirov with uppercuts and hooks.

Take into consideration Jirov was known to be quite durable himself with an unrelenting style. Toney was caught clean a bit, but he was able to wade through part of the damage, and use what is going to be considered a legendary defense to overcome him and out damage him which is something nobody was expecting to happen at the time..

Victory over Michael Nunn was amazing as well. Top it off, Toney is a true personality in boxing.

Have to respect him for his learned boxing ability and mind in the ring. The guy is a living legend.
