I thought while we seem to be on the subject, i was going ask you guys what you think about toney's legacy the big question though how much did the move to heavyweight affect his legacy? and what do you think he could of done to rank higher in your ATG lists instead?
Lost every round of the fight vs RJJ in his prime. All his important fights he either won or lost by close margins...Not 2 impressive relatively speaking. That said; he's a tremendous boxer, automatic hall of famer, and beat/was competitive w/ every person he fought in his career besides RJJ.
exactly what i thought, he should of laid of the freakin cake & coke and stayed at cruiser/light heavy
A hall of famer with a very extensive resume of names and varying styles of fighters. Wins and loss wise he's got some questionables on both sides, not to mention the steroids taint his image too. A hall of famer and an ATG...just depending on whose ranking him.
Toney lacked dedication and the steroid issue hurts and he was not the most adaptable of fighters, but the thing that comes to mind when I think of him is "Fight anybody, anywhere." He won the middleweight crown in his early 20's and was considered a P4P elite just a couple years into his career yet has had 80 fights, going all the way up to heavyweight, and rarely missed a top level guy along the way. His greatness is overplayed sometimes, but he was a born fighter.
i heard a crazy fact that he had started boxing in the gym 2 years before he went pro. somthing crazy like he was one of the best fighters in the sport in only 4 years of preoffessional training...eubank said he took 3 years to perfect his right hand yet already toney would of been on the world title circuit. somone back me up about his amatuer stuff
