His win over Michael Nunn is a better win than Hopkins has on his whole middleweight resume. Wins over McCallum, Barkley, Jirov, Holyfield, should have been heavyweight champ, dont dick around with steroid comments because I think we know what the business is at heavyweight. Yes hopkins is great an had good longevity but I count quality over quantity. James was smaller framed but still moved up an took riskier fights than Hopkins could ever dream of. I always hear this bull**** about Hopkins being rated above him. Hes actually rated lower in my opinion and by a good margin. James had close to 90 fights you're going to lose a few here and there it is what it is. PS: James took his beatings like a man, hopkins falls on the ground an ****
Kirkland Laing also has a better single win then anything on Hopkins or Toneys resume...I guess Laing is better then both of them.
Barkley VERY overrated and nothing more than decent. Jirov - european level at best. The only ones to blow him out of proportion were the Toney fans. Holyfield was old.
I didnt say toney was a better middleweight. I said he had a better win at middleweight than hopkins did. James body of work on the whole is better period.
I think Hopkins and Toney's resume are on equal grounds. The truth is that Toney's resume is very underrated.
European level at best please leave the thread. Jirov was the best cruisr in the world Hopkins fought robet allens, trinidad was nothing more than decent at middleweight and a former welter, see how I can nitpick too? Holyfield was still a big man and old but still dangerous, especially for a 5 9 man fighting for his first time at heavy an that little middle destroyed him.
Lets not dick around with steroid comments i think the thread starter said.OK if that fat twat Toney somehow gets in the hof it should read STEROID CHEAT under his name.He got what,a year ban? Should of had at least a 5 year ban from the sport.Arcane, you mentioned Kirkland Laing, made Roberto Duran quit haha then vanishes into obscurity.Such a special talent wasted, the guy had a great future ahead of him and blew it.
Toney is an underrated monster. You do question if he had taken steroids in his middleweight days also..but that opens a can of worms as we may end up asking..'did his opponents also take steroids?' From 1991-1994, his winning streak is baaddddddd.
I don't even have to mention his steroid abuse, the fact his whole run above 168 is suspect isn't the point the point is prime Toney was drawing with Sanderline Williams while benefitting from dubious decisions over Sosa, Johnson and Tiberi while getting schooled by Jones Jr after which he got outboxed by the 5"7 Montell Griffin TWICE before going onto lose to Drake Thadzi. Even then i'd argue he should have dropped atleast 1 of 3 decisions he got against Mike McCallum. Now if we look at those 'wins' and losses we can say Toney fought ONE elite opponent in Jones Jr and was schooled and made to look silly, and from his 'wins' there's only Reggie Johnson who was of any quality outside of McCallum and Nunn.
Did his opponents also fail MULTIPLE drug tests? No doubt, the thing is he was in his PRIME and he was benefitting from gifts while scraping draws with Sanderline Williams, this wasn't some old Toney this was prime Toney. While we can look at Hopkins resume and say he not once benefitted from a gift or disputed decision yet had found himself constantly screwed over every single time he had a close fight; Mercado, Taylor 1 and 2, Calzaghe, Pascal 1
James Toney's entire career should be called into question. How many times did he cheat by using steroids?
