Great fighter but he's pretty racist tbh.. I remember during the Rahman press conference he was banging on about how there will never be a white HW.. seriously.. the guys a fruit loop.. badly punch drunk these days too.. quite sad really
Smart or not , thruth spoken . Avoiding interesting fights like vs parker or kabayel , avoiding to fight at all whenever possible , no legacy on the resume , fighting only guys already beaten . Indeed boring as hell
Toney is American biased and obviously doesn't follow current boxing closely if at all. Also Sam Peter's rabbit punching must've been wore than realised. Interesting how 'slick' fighters seem to be more damaged after boxing - probably the reverberating shots round the back of the head area whilst leaning over.
James Toney was awesome in his prime and always enjoy watching his old fights but he comes across as a bitter old man. It's honestly sad whenever I see interviews of him and hearing him slur his words. Not sure why he considers Usyk boring considering that he throws more punches and fights aggressively while still displaying great technique. If Toney from the Jirov fight fought a prime Usyk I'd favor Usyk who just had the movement and workrate that would have troubled Toney.
I think Toney just liked to spar a lot and it got his coherence (his words were he did 15-20 or 25 5min rounds) I believe Benton, Qawi and Mayweather Jnr seem/seemed to be holding up fine (RIP Benton) but the fact Toney bent off to his right the way he did for the overhand or the hook did make him a target for the rabbit punch Samuel Peter was a POS for what he was doing there did we see people do that to FMJ much?
I’m one of the biggest Toney fans around, love his skills, love his respect for the game (in his own way) and everything he accomplished his personality (outside his mindset towards fighting) was just terrible, I actively looked for fighters to replace watching him with just because I thoroughly disliked Toney the person… but man could that guy fight I’ve watched more of him then pretty much any other fighter, if he had manners like Chris Eubank Snr I’d name my son Toney but yeah as it stands salty, bitter and mean.
I recall in the lead up to the Benn-Eubank Senior bout a British tv channel had both fighters in the studio and for some reason had Mickey Rourke on a live audio feed (he was boxing at the time). Toney shows up and proceeds to insult Benn intensely I'm his usual crazed manner. Then he gave the microphone back to Rourke who just shrugged his shoulders.
What did he say? Need subtitles Seriously, he gives credit to nobody and is a slabber. Great fighter in his day. Tough as they come and highly skilled, but he makes Holmes look like santa claus when it comes to giving compliments
Well… I would hope not! That means everyone would be popping for steroids and losing to guys like Tiberi! No the UFC would take over at that point! And I sure as hell wouldn’t want every UFC fight to fight like Toney did there either! This content is protected lol
This is, Toney can't be an idiot, or at least didn't used to be (CTE is a *****). You think he independently re-developed every old timey black murderer's row boxing technique? He had to have spent as much time studying technique as he did at the buffet. This is like when I've heard people call Floyd Mayweather dumb, sorry, he can't be. Unless the only type of intelligence out there that counts is the ability to learn calculus or provide a brief justification for the ontological necessity of modern man's existential dilemmas? As to his comment about Benn and Eubank being boring, they proved that one wrong. Lol. That was probably fight of the year.
