With quite a few of the best fighters in the division moving up to 122 I wouldn't rule it out to be honest. He's done very well as it is but I think it all depends on the opportunity he gets and whether it's came at the right time for him.
And it's no from me too. He's in too hot a division. He's European level who might be competitive at world level without winning a title. Nice lad though
he will deffinatley get a shot. He is No.1 with the WBC and I beleive a final elminator is next for him. I guess it depends on whether or not he goes to Japan. He is simular to Cleverly in the sense he beat a tough domestic champion in Napa nearing the end of his career like Oakey. Then went on a run slowly beating better guys. Still think McDonnel needs a real test like Clev got with Murat. But don't see him getting the easy vacant title fight Clev got....although it wasnt his fault. a big factor will be whether he gets the fight in England or elsewhere.
Maybe. If he keeps improving. He's come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years. World level is another step up but he has the self belief now. Hopefully he'll get a WBC title shot soon and we'll find out.
are there any weak champions at bantam? or anyone planning to vacate? maybe a way in for him that way?
Mares has just vacated the IBF to go up to Super-Bantam. He'd have comfortably lost to him. Moreno is the WBA champion (don't know if they've decided they need another one or not yet), beat Darchinyan convincingly last time out and would likely do the same to Jamie. Donaire vacated the WBC & WBO to move up to. Yamanaka took the WBC (beat Vic too recently) and Arce has the WBO. The aging Mexican would probably be the best bet for McDonnell to get a belt off 1 of the current holders but he'd have to travel for it and it's still a difficult proposition despite his age. A shot at the vacant IBF belt though should be the route he looks to. Especially, if he could get a fight for it in England. Not sure about the situation around it though to be honest.
I think he could sneak one, nows the right time I think as he's defended his Euro belt 3 times now I think!
He needs a year of learning fights before even thinking about it. Euro level is probably on a par with English level at the lower weights, a good fighter like Jamoye aside. The gap just can't be bridged in one fight barring a crap champion. A Mexican or an Asian opponent next is what's needed.
