The point is Matchroom have a monopoly on mainstream TV. Hobson's hands were tied as he said long before the fight happened. He had no channel to show the fight. The way it is going soon Hearn will promote all the top UK fighters. We will see ambitious judges and refs favouring Hearn fighters because they will know Matchroom is the only show in town for TV fights. I wouldn't put it past the Hearn's to try and get a grip of the BBBofC and then try and get Barry Hearn installed as the chairman. Remember what they did with snooker and darts. If it keeps going the way it is the fans won't see the best fighting the best as Matchroom will be picking and choosing the fights without interference or challenges from other promoters.
Lets be honest. It wouldn't really have made any difference what channel McDonnell was on. He wasn't particularly well known amongst casual boxing fans never mind sports fans. Neither Sky or Boxnation would have felt McDonnel justified headlining his own card and if they did show it, I'm sure they'd have wanted to incorporate the fight into one of their own shows which would have meant losing his home town venue and going somewhere with a proven ticket selling record - London, Liverpool, Manchester etc. In my opinion, Hobson delivered as much as you could realistically expect for McDonnell.
I'm sure Hobson could have done a deal with Hearn. The best arent fighting the best anyway, maybe if Hearn has all or most of them they are more likely to be matched up as there arent any obstacles. I dont know, Boxing seems to have far too much stuff going on that appears to be trying to pull the wool over someones eyes. When it comes to money though I guess it's no different to other sports / businesses but you would think the whole team would work together to ensure each party is fairly happy.
If you listen to Team McDonnell they implored Hobson to get the world title in Doncaster, Hobson duly did. If you then listen to Team McDonnell they claimed they would sell out the Keepmoat Stadium as this was the biggest fight ever to hit their town/city In reality a little over 2000 people turned up.
I have to disagree, viewing figures through SKY versus PPV primetime would have been quite large. It would have needed to have been part of a bigger show which may have then filled the venue. Sounds like between the lot of them bad decisions were made.
People keep talking about how great Hobson was for McDonnell, yet whilst you can't deny he did well to get the title shot in the UK, it is worth remembering that since then he has done next-to-nothing for Jamie. His career has completely stalled.
I dont know enough about it but IMO there must have been better option's to Team McDonnell which Hobson is part of?
That's because Jamie pissed off after the fight when he should have been making plans and milking the publicity. Since then he has been flirting with Hearn. It is possible to get a 3 month extension and delay the mandatory for 8 months but Matchroom made a mess of doing that. Eddie and paperwork again. He needs to go back to school.
You're right, the difference in Sky's viewing figures vs. a PPV through Primetime would be massive. Conservatively 10-20 times higher. But that's not the point... Hearn would only have added McDonnell to one of his shows if it was going to add value to it and deliver him a greater income. McDonnell would have added such a minimal amount of additional ratings (to keep Sky happy) or ticket sales (to fill his pockets) on top of what Ricky Burns would deliver on his own that it wouldn't be worth doing it. You've got to remember that as he didn't manage or promote McDonnell it's just an added complication and expense. It's telling that McDonnell only shifted 2k tickets at home. If he'd have had to go to Scotland how many of those would actually have travelled? McDonnell on Sky would never have been viable, therefore Hobson did the best he could getting it televised.
Hobson had previously done deals with Matchroom & Hearn his eliminator with Darwin Zamora was on SKY there was room to do a deal big mistake to go against Burns head to head. He wanted SOLE promotional rights the SKY deal is 20 dates a year with Matchroom like it or not the budget was already allocated on a exclusive deal Hobson should of known better. The door was shut on any one off deal. He should of moved it back to the Friday night it effected the gate on the night plus the FA Cup final was on the 11th May early evening ko don't underestimate that fact. The casual sport fans would of watched the final & switched straight over to the Burns show. The casual attending boxing fan (casual sport fan in general) was what Hobson was budgeting for again a miscalculation. Hobson paid through the nose to get Ceja here won the purse bid by SOME distance it was a terrible business decision whatever way you look at it.I would be critical if he was a novice let alone experienced insane move. Also guess what was shown on SKY on the night of Matthysse v Peterson 18th May......that's right McDonnell v Ceja full fight tape delay from the week before so Hobson couldn't of done a deal?Badly put together show & as promoter don't blame anyone but yourself the figures were never going to add up experienced promoter that he is should of had a tv deal in place before bidding without their interest suicidal move.
Your point is Hobson could have got a better deal on TV and on the purse bids. So what? He got his man the IBF belt fighting in his home town. His reward for that is McDonnell walks away from him. Hobson hasn't been as bad as Eddie when it comes to filling in forms. Let's see how great Eddie is for McDonnell now he has no belt. McDonnell should have done things right by fulfilling his contract with Hobson and making everybody who put him where he is a nice pay day. Then he could have skited off to Matchroom. I've no sympathy for McDonnell. He brought this on himself.
My point being there was NO TV deal in place crazy move TV is the dictator in sport especially boxing Hobson rolled the dice & miscalculated badly. I actually agree McDonnell isn't going to make anyone much money why Hobson decided to shoot himself in the foot with the date & money paid only he can answer that.Suicidal especially from someone experienced. Loyalty in sport went out with the ark sadly if the sums didn't add up in making the fight he should of got someone else on board he didn't.
My point is McDonnell didn't take a financial hit from winning the title so what does he care. The reality is his promoter got him in a position were he won a belt. The fight would never have been PPV had McDonnell being fighting on Sky. McDonnell's first fight with Matchroom if he held the IBF belt would not have been PPV. Barker has more recognition with the public than McDonnell and Barker won't be PPV. The value for McDonnell was owning the belt and what others would pay to get their fighter a crack at it. It was all about the belt and McDonnell has blown that. In terms of loyalty going out with the ark look at Lennox, Hatton or Hamed. They didn't jump ship the first sniff of success they had. The bottom line is McDonnell has to climb to the top of the mountain again. He hasn't been too clever.
I agree with you in thaT no matter who or on what platform McDonnell was fighting on he wouldn't of been PPV worthy on his own right. But however you look at loyalty (there is very little anywhere IMO) which more now than ever in sport is only about who or what pays the most £ Hobson made some terrible decisions on staging that fight the night he did especially on Primetime!
