...who took one of the women's belts off our Shanny Courtenay, lost said belt to a 40-year-old British underdog, Nina Hughes, in Dubai last night. Expect a big-money offer from Eddie and Shanny for a "Battle of Essex" to get the belt back in-house for the rematch with Bridges... Apologies to all those that hate women's boxing, just thought it demonstrated how random the sport is.
A 40yo on her 6th fight or something becoming world champion. The absolute top level fights are good, better with 3 mins but take a little step below that and it's total nonsense. Like Sandy Ryan is ranked #2 in the world on boxrec
It's none of my business really but I'd love to know what they're getting paid. Boxing is hardly a career choice at 40 but there can't be much in it for them. For a "journeyman" a free trip to Dubai and a bit of sponsorship is probably good going.
Well done to Nina, didn't realise she was 40 wow. Tbf think Mitchell is round about the same age. Mitchell also smashed the other British girl up in her 1st defence, forgot her name, she's from Liverpool and she's southpaw
A journeyman would get a purse just the same as any fighter. In fact the journeymen are in such a strong position atm that they are getting paid more than most of the home fighters on the small halls and only the ones in t.v contracts are getting paid more than them and even then they will sometimes get ore than the undercard fighters, it all depends on how important they are at that particular time which will then quantify how much leverage they have. The British journeyman is in big demand atm as there isn't enough of them. You're understanding and opinion of a journey man seems a bit narrow and uninformed mate.
Slightly off thread but regarding the point about journey men pay how much is it? About £1000? I've enjoyed watching Poochi winning recently, must have shocked a few fighters thinking **** he's not reading the script.
It's like any other buisness, your asking price will depend on how much in demand u are. But as a basic start, a JM with plenty of notice booked in advance against an average opponent, on a small hall, will get about £1300 for 4x3s, that's the purse, plus overheads for travel, if its over say 70mile. And money for overnight accommodation if needed. Other than that the JM has leverage over short notice, opponent been really good or a banger, weight discrepancies and straight up desperation from a promoter/matchmaker. JM will also get more on TV shows and ibvoously for more rounds. The British JM are in big demand atm and in general have good leverage simply because they're in short supply. The JM plays an important role in the UK Pro Boxing model and the opinion that they "come to lose" is incorrect. No JM comes to lose, they have a job description and tally that with the fact that they usually work a full time job may also be married with kids and they are out maybe every week or other week tips the scales in favour of the home fighter who will do a 3 month camp specifically for that JM. They have a boxing coach, a S&C coach, a performance director, physiotherapist, sport masseur, nutritionist etc etc then u can see how the scales are tipped. On top of that the JM may be booked the week after and any cut or ko will result in them losing that fight and purse. Its now easy to imagine the contrast in how much desire a JM brings to each fight but as has been witnessed recently with men like Poochy and Karl Sampson if they are in a position or frame of mind to come and "put it on u" you could be in big trouble.
