if you had to dig for a flaw..that would be the only one..but especially for a heavyweight...as a lightheavy, it was no more of a drawback than it was for Ali as a heavy. Pastrano was a gifted boxer and big power was irrelevent.
Fast Eddie Machen,,,,,,, Regarded boxing as a job,,,,,,,,,a way to make a living. Being a World Champion wasn't his priority. Still had enough good wins and talent to be rated in the Top 5 from 1957 thru 1965.
Nino Valdes #5 Challenger Age 33 Height 6' 3" Weight 210 lbs. 41-14-2 (31 KO's) Geraldo Ramos Poncaino Valdes, called Nino, the 33 year-old, 6' 3" Cuban with skin hue of a fine havana wrapper, was once the #1 ranked heavyweight challenger to Rocky Marciano's title (August 1953 thru May 1955) A series of defeats from mid-1955 thru 1956 depreciated his stock, with 6 losses in 8 fights in order to; Archie Moore, Bob Satterfield, Bob Baker, Eddie Machen twice and Zora Folley. He has regained Top 5 status with a streak of 6 straight wins, including a February first round knock-out over Joe Erskine, the British Champion who was undefeated and ranked #4, and who was in line for a possible title chance against Floyd Patterson. Valdes, somewhat cumbrous, is a skillful boxer for his mass and has a fine right hand. He prefers to counterpunch, but there is a controversy about the size of his heart. 1958 will most likely be Nino's final year for locking down a chance at the title. He has just enough flaws, to be a safe opponent, but offers size and a right hand that makes him somewhat dangerous. Valdes needs one more good win, and he will most likely be back in line as a possible opponent for Patterson.
