Happy birthday champ! One of the most underappreciated heavyweights in modern history, and the very first that comes to mind, along with Alexis Arguello, when I think of the term "gentlemen". A truly rare attribute to find in a great fighter.
It is gratifying that over the last few months in posts on Floyd, that so many on here, have set the record straight on the timeline of his title fights. This has gone a long way to dispel the myths regarding him avoiding particular contenders. I think the majority that post on here, like me, greatly admire the special talent that kept him a world class boxer for 20 years.
I agree completely, floyd is way too underrated after the liston fights. He was a legend that set records and brought home the gold medal, why does everyone think every other fighter you set him against is going to k.o. him
I'm not sure of all the details but I'd heard that he remained in the top 10 rankings for more consecutive years than any other fighter. Support/other detail welcome. R.I.P. The sport of boxing and the world at large is so much better for your being in it!
Probably because he'd be a modern day "cruiser weight". But Patterson was one fighter that between 175 to 200 pounds was one of the best ever. The only fighters I may pick to consistently beat him in that weight range, at least more often than not, would be Rocky Marciano and Jack Dempsey, in that order. I'd slightly favor Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles over Patterson, but expect him to take one fight in a trilogy. I'd favor him over a CW version of Evander Holyfield and I'd favor him over Roy Jones at heavy. Also, I've always said that Patterson is one fighter who could likely beat many 200+ pound modern HW contenders. Patterson might not have beaten a young Mike Tyson or a prime Lennox Lewis or a prime Riddick Bowe, but he might have beaten a Trevor Berbick, a Ron Lyle, a Shannon Briggs, an Alex Stewart, a Hasim Rahman, an Oliver McCall, a John Ruiz or even a Ray Mercer on the right night. He may not always win 10/10 times if he fought those guys and all could very well beat him due to their size advantage and some could punch and Patterson didn't have the most top notch of chins but on the other hand, Patterson could beat all of those guys and none of them beating him is a foregone conclusion.
Yeah he turned pro at 17 and retired at 37 and was still beating top contenders in their prime. Just yesterday I watched Patterson vs Bonavena This content is protected Bonavena was 206 pounds and 29 years old while Patterson was 191 pounds and 37 years old and still won a UD while rocking and staggering Bonavena along the way. Patterson was still looking top notch until the end and not like a washed up has been.
