Anaguchi was hospitalised and underwent an emergency craniotomy for a subdural hematoma after his fight with Seiya Tsutsumi (brutal fight which he lost). He had since remained unconscious and has died from the results of his injuries.

JBC announced today that he passed away.

    "
Kazuki Anaguchi remains unconscious following emergency brain surgery.

Grave concern has been expressed for the 23-year-old southpaw who has yet to regain consciousness from injuries sustained in a December 26 unanimous decision defeat to countryman Seiya Tsutsumi. The ESPN+/Lemino aired bout saw Anaguchi go all-in during a Fight of the Year candidate between unbeaten Japanese bantamweights, though also featured the frightening shot of his legs twitching as medical attention was paid to a gruesome cut over his left eye.

Anaguchi was taken to a nearby hospital, where he fell into an unconscious state before he arrived in his assigned room. Doctors have since performed an emergency craniotomy to remove a subdural hematoma on the right side of his brain.

Anaguchi was game throughout and outfought Tsutsumi in several rounds in his challenge for the Japanese bantamweight title. However, he was dropped in rounds four, seven, nine and ten which ultimately produced the margin of victory for Tsutsumi (10-0-2, 7KOs) by scores of 95-91, 94-92 and 94-92." ******* article for some reason I cannot link. As someone who watched it live and was amazed at the heart he showed, and the FOTY contender he was putting on, I was so thrilled, I didn't even consider this was a possibility because the knockdowns didn't seem that bad at the time. But it serves as a stark reminder the risks involved in this brutal sport we're all such fans of, which should also remind us to be far more appreciative of those potentially life altering and life ending risks and respectful of the fighters who are laying it all on the line. Rest in Peace Kazuki.:ohno

I saw this live and shortly after the fight I told my son he needed to watch it because it was such a great bout. Now I'm glad he never got around to it. This is very sad.

    RIP Kazuki.

Agreed. Sadly, I can guarantee there will be posters here paying their respects, and then in 3 months time will be calling out another fighter for being a quitter (and I'm aiming this at nobody in particular... I'm more of a long-time lurker than a poster, and I don't really take a lot of notice of which posters say what things... I just read the posts themselves). NO fighter should ever be criticised for quitting... and it's a culture in boxing that needs to end. Sure, by all means, fighters deserve all the praise and respect when they show incredible bravery and heart, 100%, but it shouldn't be expected for EVERY single fighter to be able to do it... otherwise, if every fighter did it, then it'd just become the norm, and wouldn't stand out or be noticed anymore. No one can know exactly what that fighter is feeling in the moment, physically or mentally. Instead, we should show respect for any man who chooses to get in the ring. We forget this. Anything else is just a bonus. Look at the flack Dubois got against Joyce. Even before the Usyk loss, he'd developed a reputation off the back of one loss where he fractured his orbital socket... who knows what irreparable damage he might've done if he'd carried on? Going back a while, but remember Golota against Tyson? Same thing... he had a serious injury also. Fighters KNOW when they have a problem. It's just that some listen to what their body is telling them and make a smart decision... nothing wrong with that.

Anyway, tragic news. R.I.P. Kazuki. I guess if this kind of thing has to happen in boxing from time to time, you'd rather it be in a war like that, rather than an uncomfortable, one-sided beating. At least it's easier to watch this one back and think, 'He did himself proud'.
