Hearn actually summed up the difference perfectly pre-fight to Degale v Jack. US fans support the best. The guy with the '0'. UK fans support the underdog, the man who dares to dream and the man who takes risk. UK fans are loyal, US fans often jump ship when that magical '0' disappears. If Wilder and Miller were British....... 1 - They would've been forced to fight by now 2 - Until they did fight, they'd be even less popular in the UK than they currently are in the US.
That pretty much sums it up. Brits love a plucky loser. There's something about being the underdog that the Brits connect with. Not sure if it's a left over from the WW2 Blitz mentality or if it's something to do with our fascination with the class system and so most have an empathy for the underdog/underclass. And anyone who's watched any US sports knows the yanks love their sporting statistics and a fighters record is just another statistic for them to fixate on.
Great job explaining the conglomeration of conflicting interests. What all the non-fighting participants fail to realize is that it’s a lot easier to create marketable fighters if they let the fighters do what they do best, fight. Regularly would be nice too, even if it meant allowing them to do so in non-televised fights.
Don’t forget to mention the fighters’ requirement to become businessmen first when/if they happen to win a title. Of course this happens when networks have exclusive deals with certain promoters’ fighters and the promoters are reluctant to “cross the street” to work with rival promoters. With the Super Champions, Regular Champions, Diamond Champions, etc., I fully expect we’ll eventually see some version of the following: PBC WW Champion Golden Boy WW Champion Top Rank WW Champion
@Brighton bomber Maybe this is a large factor as to why boxing is on the decline from the masses in the US. Their politics have shown recently that they're anti 'establishment' and the 'elite'. The yanks are becoming more British.....
How does the split not matter? A fighter is going to want a decent split no matter who is paying for the fight. I don't think any contender deserves a off enforced 75/25 split in their favor against another contender.
Yeah and I'm saying this rule is BS that makes no sense. Why would you treat your number 1 ranked contender like a champ? I'd feel the same no matter what weight division it was in and what fighters were involved.
Miller clearly going the Wilder route for a title shot, so much so he's trying to fight a 3rd beaten Wilder fighter. Maybe Hearn is thinking if Miller beats pretty much everyone Wilder has beaten as champion, Miller will be seen as a threat like Wilder. I assume Stiverne has already been contacted and has been seen back in training, meaning someone saw him without a knife and fork in his hands, lmao.
