wee article i wrote thoughts on it and the points i made Brilliant Booth Batters Hunter By Greg Paterson Friday 16th October Jason 2 Smooth Booth the crafty Nottingham veteran defended his British Super-Bantamweight title with a brilliant 5th round stoppage by retirement against the former British Super-Bantamweight number 1 and former Steve Moliter victim, Michael Hunter. Booth started fast with sharp jabs and brilliant movement. He frustrated Hunter with his clever moves as Hunter stalked forward trying to establish himself as Booth picked him off. With about 30 seconds to go Hunter managed to pin Booth in the corner but Booth showed silky Jersey Joe Walcott esque moves to avoid punishment till the bell. The 2nd was more dominant as Booth started to pick off everything Hunter threw t him with fast counter shops in particular a left hook that he often doubled to head and body in perfect fashion. Hunter just didnt seem to be able to figure out the slick veteran. Booth started to up it in the 3rd as Hunter always aggressive walked straight into Booth as Booth shortened the distance and started landing fast combinations with the highlights being left hooks, to head and body, and straight right hands. The 4th was a masterclass in the seamless transition of defence to offence as Booth started coming forward and leading with fast combinations and changing his angle and picking off the return fire from Hunter. Booth punctuated the round with a flurry of fast straight punches and added a sharp left hook to the body of Hunter. Hunter was there for the taking in round 5 as he cut a desolate and confused fighter, much like he did against Steve Moliter. Booth was really out classing him and a left hook to the body early on seemed to signal the downfall of Hunter as Booth really turned it on with his fast combinations that oozed class. Booth was really ripping in hard left hooks to the body and finishing up at the head, like Julio Cesear Chavez used to do. At the end of the round Hunters corner retired him correctly as he complained of sore right ribs. Booth is in great form at the moment but is really just a blown up Bantamweight as he showed by weighing in 3lbs under the limit. His blend of sharp punches and smooth defence is a formidable nights work for any Super-Bantamweight in Europe including Booths sparring partner and the European Champion, Randall Munroe. I think Booth has a future at Bantamweight, where he holds the Commonwealth Title. His old foe Ian Napa is challenging for the British Title against Gary Davies and whoever wins that vs Booth is a mouth-watering clash. Ian Napa is favoured to beat Davies and has already beaten Booth but Booth has really improved since the loss. Booth definitely has the talent to be a top fighter in the European scene at either Bantamweight or Super-Bantamweight and perhaps a world title shot is a realistic aim but winning it would be a different matter with the great Hozumi Hasegawa and Joseph Agbeko at Bantamweight and Celestino Cabblero and Juan Manuel Lopez at Super-Bantamweight. Anyway, British boxing has a new hope in the rejuvenated 31 year old Jason Booth.
great article. it was an amazing display by booth when you consider he was british flyweight champ 10 years ago, and that was against a former world title challenger...and at super-batam...and a superb display of skill....quite amazing when you weigh it all up.
thanks Dougie i was very impressed with Booth i really like him think hes quality also great pic with Ray Leonard
Booth is so underrated and always gets overlooked he is top class. He deserves a Euro Strap and a last shot at a World Strap. In terms of skills, ability and ring savy there arent many better in the UK. Some of the little moves and tricks he does are so complex.
i wonder if we'll ever see a third bout with him and napa...if napa wins british bantam ??...but then booth might be moving on away from domestic ?
hopefully Booth wants to stay at Bantam and clear up odmestically at SBW i can see him not being as effective
I would like to see him fight Bouziane for the European title. It is a title that is missing from his mantle piece (won a commonwealth and I'm pretty sure he has won the British outright) and I think he would win. After that he could either fight the British champ (who ever that may be at the time) or get a fight for a world title I am sure that Moreno would come over to the UK.
Watched his last 2 comeback fights and he has the perfect nick name in " Too Smooth ". Makes everything look so simple. Pleasure to watch
nice article greg, enjoyed the read after enjoying the fight. Booth's continued improvement seems relentless at the moment and his skills are a joy to watch.who knows how much quicker he would have got to this level if he didn't "hit the bottle" so hard a few years back?. i like your writing, but would have liked to hear some of the fight from Hunters point of view,ie;what plan he came in with, what he was doing wrong, what he lacked etc....and isn't it rEndall munroe. >(friendly criticism mate:good)<
fair enough should have done that but kinda ran out of space and dont want to bore yous iwht age after page also sorry my typing aint the bst it is Rendall
