Headlining a GBP on ESPN2 card tomorrow from 10pm EST at the Fantasy Springs Casino. NABF middleweight title on the line, first defense of Quigley.
I'll be rooting for the Rail but he's going to be in for a train wreck here. Quigley may have looked a dud so far in the pros but he's still a young strong natural MW (at least, may end up higher) and El Riel is a 39 year old welterweight ...probably a little too durable to call a glass cannon outright but somebody who is definitely offensive-minded (to a fault) and relied overly much on his power - against much smaller men thaen Quigley - even in his prime.
Quigley wrecks him, and he'll look amazing doing it, sure he looked average against De La Rosa and Tapia, but in his defense, he injured his hand in the Tapia fight, and De La Rosa being violently KO'd by Centeno isn't that bad and was an outlier, not a sign of a **** chin, clearly Hugo's overhand left is deadly as Lee's right hook if he catches you right with it.
Well, yeah, I think we probably haven't seen the best of the Ballybofey lad in the pros yet, but mostly he will look amazing because Freddy is an undersized one-dimensional geezer with a lot of wear and tear on him. The more interesting matchup on the card (which for some reason isn't listed on BoxRec despite being confirmed by GBP on social media, with pics of both combatants weighing in and everything) is Christian González vs. Rey Pérez II - you'll recall that Chimpa, once a touted Mexican prospect, got completely schooled by The Sindangan Technician in February, proving that his kayo loss to Romero C. Duno less than a year earlier was no fluke. If you ask me, Chimpa's handlers oughtn't put him anywhere near any more tough Filipinos unless they want him exposed thrice over and cast into the bankability reject heap. So either some major improvements have been made in the gym in the last eight months or they've decided to give him one last chance to sink or swim.
Full card: Elnur Abduraimov vs. Giovannie González, 4 rounds @ super featherweight Recky Dulay vs. Edgar Ortega, 6 rounds @ featherweight Angel Ruiz vs. Jonathan Fortuna, 8 rounds @ junior welterweight Christian González vs. Rey Pérez II, 8 rounds @ lightweight Jason Robert Quigley vs. Freddy Hernández Gómez, 10 rounds @ middleweight Hopefully there is a stream for the undercard, as I doubt they're squeezing in more than a match or two on the main televised broadcast starting at 10pm EST.
