FWIW, triangle-theory logic would suggest yeah, maybe he could be. Maciel lost a split decision to Mateo Damian Verón recently (and that's in a fight where Verón was dropped and had points deducted on fouls) while Ríos outpointed him a while before that.

 

Shokhrukh Abdiev vs. Luis Miguel Ojeda, 4 rounds @ light welterweight

 

Hmm...battle of the ring entrance themes is a draw, IMO.

Ojeda came out to "I Believe In Miracles" by The Ramones, while Abdiev (yet another Argentinian-based Kazakh puncher) strolled in to "Sex Type Thing" by Stone Temple Pilots.

Both solid choices.

 

Round 1

Abdiev is walking Ojeda down and jabbing & hooking at the body while launching fishing-line right hands up top. Gum shield out for Ojeda. Replaced. Time in. Abdiev really focusing on the body, ducking low to spring-load his combos and banging away beneath Ojeda's elbows. Very little in return from Ojeda, just sliding away, pawing a couple of jabs, leaning in place. Ojeda shows a little bit of slippery defense when Abdiev goes headhunting, dipping his shoulder under the punches.

Round 2

Abdiev is jabbing the belly and forcing a car-jacking uppercut into the chest and chin. Ojeda is rolling his upper body in place at medium-close range, tossing light slapping flurries at the head while sliding his feet back and then resuming his wide spiral away from Abdiev. When far off, Abdiev is conserving his energy, keeping his output to a minimum. In close, virtually all body shots. BIG sweeping hook into the ribs by Abdiev. Ojeda partially blocked it but was hurt enough to scramble into the ropes in a straight line nonetheless. Abdiev down, slip, think his own momentum carried him off-balance.

Round 3

Abdiev is walking Ojeda into the corner, where Ojeda frees himself with a butterfly net left hook up in the air. Abdiev is working his way in close and torquing in hard lefts all up & down Ojeda's starboard, unworried about hitting guard, shoulder, hip, or legal scoring areas. Ojeda attempts touching gloves on a break and he's ignored by Abdiev, who is all business. Slow & steady business, in just one gear...

Round 4

Abdiev is jabbing over and over at the body. Ojeda is now carrying his left arm low, drawing Abdiev toward him and seeming to want to line him up & time him with a counter down the pipe but never pulling trigger except on light stay-away jabs. Abdiev is clapping right hands across the shoulder & neck after body-jabbing his way inside. Abdiev leads with a right and misses a few inches wide of the face as Ojeda slashes upward into the air with a pair of errant backhanded uppercuts off the hip, desperation shots to buy himself clearance and get away from the ropes.

Okay, so this was promoted to a 6-rounder, then. BoxRec still has it listed as 4.

 

Round 5

Abdiev is jabbing in, getting parried off the back of the left glove by Ojeda. Nice defense by Ojeda but he isn't putting anything together with that in terms of scoring output. Abdiev's work is largely nullified and rendered ineffective (except for one mid-round uppercut with Ojeda briefly trapped on the ropes), but he's still touching Ojeda's body on the inside, as opposed to virtually none of the very few jabs Ojeda is throwing managing to connect.
