Mendoza vs. Fuentes will not be for the IBF 108lb title as originally scheduled. It has been demoted to a 10-rounder.

Mendoza is set to defend next against Milan Melindo - win, lose or draw against Fuentes tonight.

Yeah, he made for a joke of a challenger which I think is why the IBF balked at this being a title defense for Mendoza.

Round 1

Esquivel is miming his jab on the body, measuring. Esquivel falls in with a right downstairs but Ortega circles out of reach, light on his toes. Ortega starts pecking with the right jab darting in. They move toward the ropes and Ortega turns over a right hook but puts nothing on it as he is strafing by. Esquivel comes in, misses a jab, and stands stock still as Ortega comes back with a left hand lead. Esquivel turns and takes a 1-2 above the ear on the exposed left side of the head. Esquivel is backing away, slapping down at Ortega's right jab with both hands and sucking his belly in to get clear of the plunging left. Esquivel takes a right jab between the eyes lunging in on his front knee but lands a 1-2 and grazing uppercut in the process. Ortega backs away.

Round 2

Esquivel is backed onto the ropes as Ortega forks in straight body shots in alternation, nonstop while Esquivel is countering with left hooks and chopping rights on the face. Good two-way action. Ortega bounces out to center ring, swaying from side to side with his gloves up in a peekaboo stance. A bit too much excess movement by Ortega. Flush right hand lead on the outside by Esquivel, timing Ortega's circling and perfectly gauging the distance to put Ortega on the end of his punch. Esquivel is leaving his chin out, bending his neck to slip Ortega's right jab with his gloves raised over his face as insurance, and countering with quick right hands down the pipe as Ortega is reeling in his arm. Good clever boxing by Esquivel. Lots of success with the single right hand.
