Javier Mendoza vs. Mauricio Fuentes & Edivaldo Ortega vs. Christian Esquivel RBR

Yeah! Thank goodness, because I'm not optimistic about the main event being the slightest bit competitive.

 

Round 3

Ortega is leading with right hooks and putting the left cross in behind it, shooting forth with his entire body. Esquivel backpedals quickly and then snaps off the ropes. Esquivel is keeping distance, eluding Ortega and not engaging on his terms for now. Esquivel starts getting back into a rhythm with the right hand lead on the outside as Ortega flits around him moving to either side. Looping left on the lower mandible in an exchange by Ortega and Esquivel is HURT! Esquivel is shaking the cobwebs and hopping out of the pocket. Ortega swoops in, raining left hands and right hooks on Esquivel's face as he falls back against the ropes. Esquivel crumples.

KO3!

 

Esquivel was actually the one in that match-up with more of th "puncher" reputation, by far. (not only was his KO% higher, but the competition Esquivel had mixed with is leagues beyond anything Ortega has seen...and he dropped Yamanaka in a loss)

Yet when they went blow for blow, Ortega's power carried the day.

 

Yeah, and you could argue Esquivel was up 2-0 and was actually starting to mount an offensive comeback a minute into that round (after having spent most of that minute running) until, kaboom.

 

Jose "El Temible" Luis Castillo is the special guest ****yst in the studio.

He is asked for his picks on a couple of upcoming (rumored) super fights point blank.

First, on Mayweather vs. Pacquiao - he simply says "Juan Manuel Marquez". He then elaborates, very briefly. (presumably pointing to their commonality of having fought him and how facile it was for Mayweather and anything but for Pacquiao, implying Castillo is picking his old foe)

Then, on Canelo vs. Cotto, he mulls it over a bit longer and does a bit of seesawing hand gesticulation, before finally saying something to the effect of "gun to my head, Cotto".

 

Javier Mendoza vs. Mauricio Fuentes, 10 rounds @ flyweight

 

Since the belt was taken off the table in this contest, neither man even bothered coming in under the light flyweight limit.

Both weighed 110lbs officially.
