The tough Argentine boxer began his comeback last month, following the first legitimate defeat of his career at the hands of Dmitry Pirog in a failed WBO middleweight title bid that proved at the very least that he was no unskilled third-world bum being led to the slaughter as many ignorantly predicted when he not only lasted the distance but burgled some rounds. In the process of getting back on the winning track in his home return, he collected a very minor WBO trinket to keep himself afloat in the rankings. [yt]KU49lqj2tvs[/yt] Against Pirog he adopted a much more defensive approach than usual, spoiling the Russian champion's boxing and making him look pedestrian at times (leading some idiot nuthuggers to write it off as an "off night", and some idiot haters to write it off as Pirog having been exposed as a so-called paper titlist - both extremist camps going out of their way to avoid simply giving Maciel credit as being better than almost anyone had scouted him as being). Here, against Oliveira - who boasted a 90% KO ratio but is obviously nowhere near as concussive a thunk-wright as Pirog - he had the luxury of reverting more to his usually aggressive form. Warm to the task, he showed off his body punching prowess with that two-fisted slashing attack reminiscent of the Blades of Chaos in God Of War. Still, he didn't roam in and willingly eat punches - dropping levels, moving his head, and arm-blocking where necessary he kept the punch stats fairly one-sided for the brief duration of the bout. His organ-grinding power was evident as he made chouriço of Oliveira's guts with both knockdown-scoring combos. The WBO currently has Maciel ranked #12 at 154 lbs., which seems a more comfortable weight for him after having spent the bulk of his career up at middleweight skewing toward the smallish side. I think that's more than fair, and can see him beating several contenders ranked in the top 20 by other sanctioning bodies and independent media outlets. He'd make for compelling match-ups with just about every belt-holder in the division as well. Hopefully he ventures back out of Argentina soon and unleashes the beast on more than just the South American scene. :good A world class, rated opponent by mid 2012 would be great. He's still young enough that there's no need to worry about rushing straight back toward his next title shot. It will come...as long as he travels.
Thanks for the vid! I only saw him against Pirog but the bodyshots in this fight are impressive. At 154 he can definitely be a threat. Not sure who's his promoter but being an Argentinean boxer is no easy task that's for sure. I would not mind seeing him against Brewer.
He made the Pirog fight UGLY, but I still only had him winning two and a half rounds. I'm curious, why such a big fan IB?
He showed that Pirog didnt really know what to do when facing someone with good defnce. I still felt that Maciel lacked offense but he looked good on this one.
He's a skilled boxer who's been victimized by the sport's seamier side (the story behind that first "loss" will turn your stomach) and come back to willingly raise his level. He got written off by about 99% of this forum as being a complete joke of an opponent based on just the fact that he hadn't fought anyone they knew. ****ing lazy Boxrec scholars who can't be bothered with minimal snooping online for some video on a fighter before just passing judgment on what they see in black and white (and red, blue and green) really get my goat. I knew he'd be tough for Pirog but was ignored beforehand, and nobody bothered to change their tune afterward. Instead it was "Oh, bad night..." or "Oh, Pirog must just suck". I like seeing the hordes of idiots get proven wrong. I like when someone refuses to play a certain role and just flips the script. I'd like to see this kid ultimately make good on his career after showing he can at least hang with a prime elite champ, and isn't just the beneficiary of yet another inflated record from below the equator. There's no reason for him not to venture on out of his foxhole again to mix it up with the cream of the global crop at light middleweight. He's acquitted himself as plenty good enough.
I'll be honest I saw some clips before the Pirog fight and wasn't impressed...though he impressed massively against Pirog and could well be a serious contender at 154
It was changed from a Technical Decision win to Franco to a TKO win to Franco (I've not seen it but I would assume a clash of heads caused a cut that ended the bout). Oddly youtube has a video of the two men fighting as amateurs but sadly not their professional bout. Odds are it was Televised on TYC Sports.
Javier is headlining this week on "Boxeo De Primera" (TyC Sports, Argentina). That is the good news. The bad news is this: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=371960&cat=boxer Not a step up from his last two opponents, and in fact this one wasn't even good enough to challenge for Maciel's WBO Latino 154lb title. So this is ten rounds. Here is Ponce stopping a few cans in a tiny little Buenos Aires gym: [yt]3IyXsDz0l-s[/yt] [yt]nfR8bxawGnk[/yt] Slow, wide puncher. Poor balance. Leaves both his chin and body open most of the time. It looks like another showcase for the Beast (expect a body-shot KO again), but one that won't help him improve much as far as his ranking or sharpening his skills. Just his confidence. :conf
Results! (not yet up on Boxrec) Javier "the Beast" Baciel (20-2-0, 73.00 kg.) scored, moments ago, in the first chapter a win against Esteban Waldemar Ponce (19-7-2, 72.25 kg.). It was conducted in the Western Railway Club, Buenos Aires. Maciel to put on the victory turned to the house specialty: the left hook to the liver. The blow came full, executed with great ride and power, but only took two seconds, his opponent did not want to follow gestures in combat. The referee gave the pass, and a few seconds flew the towel in the corner showing visitors the victory by TKO of Javier Francisco Maciel. Why serve such fights Maciel? To be continued, adding victories, trust... nothing more. Was no match, there was no opposition and therefore should be more senior rivals for Javier Francisco Maciel. - rough internet translation but you get the idea.
