Now this is just plain ridiculous and greedy. Apparently WBC sees Chaves as a cash cow and they want him to pay fees. What is new to my ears is that they say JCCJR is looking to go after the WBC title. Over at the seen! Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. returns to the ring to fight Andrzej Fonfara, from Poland, on April 18th in Carson, California, for the vacant WBC International light heavyweight belt, which will include a special design. For this match the World Boxing Council created a special edition belt, with a similar look to the world title, adding the word INTERNATIONAL to it. Chavez will be back to Carson“s StubHub Center- the same arena where he fought Bryan Vera for the first time in 2013. This will be a whole new destiny, as he's now part of Al Haymon's team, signing a contract with Showtime and becoming the new Televisa Deportes star. Julio is determined to proove his quality, as he's aiming to contest the WBC world championship this year.
This is why UFC is a business model some organization within boxing ought to adopt. In other words, forget the alphabets, simply have one belt; forget the unblemished records and simply match the best fighters and make good matches throughout the card. Plus, make a portion of the card available on free tv, akin to UFC prelims. It's not without its flaws, but this is the winning formula. Yes, this model would require awesome capital, so which one of the big promoters is willing to step up and build an empire?
As it was said in a different forum, WBC also invented a floating weight class called Jr Chavezweight which at this time is at 172 pounds, so the new belt is for that weight
