now you are really seeing thing that were not there. a fight lasts 12 COMPLETE rounds. if you can't continue or respond to the referee even if there is 1 second left the stoppage is correct.

**** no, unless you think the ref should double as the timekeeper. Taylor was DONE, he didn't respond to the referee, and it does not matter even a tiny little bit how much time there was left.

I thought about Steele's decision for some time and have come to conclude that it was the correct decision. Letting Taylor continue after not responding to his questions would have been a "gift" decision IMO. Steele followed guidelines and did the right thing, regardless of how much time was left. I mean, if Steele let him go on and Chavez lands a death blow on his next punch, then what would this thread be titled? jcc vs. meldrick taylor worst decison by ref ever by not stopping fight?

The "Legendary Nights" documentaries are a very enjoyable series but theres a few of them that are not entirely fair and even handed with both boxers in the fights they are discussing. The JCC-Taylor episiode is one of those IMHO.

It was the case of one guy who was in to win a fight, the other to win a boxing match. The fighter came out on top. The results of the match show that in spades. Taylor was practically an invalid for a week. Good stoppage.

It didn't look like Taylor wanted to continue. I don't think Steele could have been aware of how much time was left when he was probably concentrating on stopping the fight at any point given the beating Chavez was inflicting on Taylor.

Taylor didn't respond because Lou Duva is raising Hell next to him on the ring apron.

Steele should have known how much time was left. He was (is) incompetent.

To the nearest second or so? If theres 2 seconds left JCC probaby can't get across the ring before the bell sounds, if theres 4 seconds left he'll get across and possibly decapitate Taylor.

Thats an unrealistcally fine margin to ask a ref to tread when you are talking about permanent injuries or (potentially) somebodies life.

I have no problem with the stoppage Taylor was destroyed. Orbital bone broken, fractured ribs, he swallowed about a pint of blood, if Chavez would of landed one more shot ( and he could of) it would of been real bad.

By any chance did anyone notice ( i believe it was the 11th round) when Taylor threw and uppercut, missed and hit himself. That's how out of it Meldrick was. Don't blame Steele, blame Duva for causing that ruckus that might of distracted Taylor from answering the ref. **** Duva could of got Taylor disqualified anyways by jumping on the ring apron as Steele started to ask Taylor the question.

a few points I would like to add or agree with on this thread.

    1) Taylor did not win every round. If you only listened to Lampley you would think so, but it just wasnt true. Did you see how bd taylor was jacked up? That didn't just happen in the 12th. Chavez was systematically breaking him down from the 4th round on. Taylor was ahead, but it wasn't even close to a shutout.

    2) If you can't answer a simple question after being asked twice, it's the refs duty to stop the fight, regardless of the time left. You are knocked out. Just because you are standing does not mean the fight goes on. that's like complaining that he got counted out with 2 seconds left.

    3) Taylor, by the rules should have been DQ'd as soon as Duva jumped on the apron.

    4) Taylor fought a great fight that night. He just fought a greater fighter.
