Whats unhinged? You said he beat Hayward, DeLima, and Sterling as proof he was significantly better than a clubfighter. I pointed out that he didnt beat Hayward. That was a hometown robbery. I wouldnt even call it a gift decision because it wasnt close. Delima beat him two out of three and only lost to him as he was beginning a slide that would see him end his career with almost as many losses as wins. Sterling likewise was nothing special and his best win at that point was over a completely shot ex great. The fact that you wont tell me who exactly youve seen him fight that made you think he was two levels above a Euro clubfighter is proof enough that youve only seen him in the couple of fights that have always been easily available. Im sure we could easily replace Bouttier in this conversation with Bogs, Licata, or Tonna and the argument would be identical. The vast majority of people who trumpet these fighters do so because they want to believe Monzon was defending against killers during his reign. They could care less that between Bouttier, Tonna, Licata, and Bogs the vast majority of fans have seen MAYBE a couple of fights of those guys each and none of them, far more often than not, are winning affairs. God forbid someone who has actually seen more of those guys speak up and give an informed opinion.
Hi Buddy. I am confused ! Not clear if you have replied to the wrong poster, not getting your last remark " whats the big deal ? " all I did in my post was point out that I felt Bouttier fought well against Monzon, that took up about 2 lines, didn't express any thoughts on him as a fighter as such, then relayed a time in my life when I went to the CCT at the cinema to see oversea title fights, the floor is yours matey. stay safe buddy.
Sorry Mike ,I don't directly respond to "The Oracle Of Boxing,"I've no wish to encourage" The Ego Has Landed" nor to have discussions with him, he not only has his opinion ,he has yours already laid out for you! lol And,if you don't say the words he expects you to he will substitute his for yours anyway! lol Because the rest of us think Bouttier was a fair fighter we are obviously saying so to boost Monzon's rep! You see he not only knows what we are going to say and why,he knows what we wanted to say but didn't ,and even what we are thinking! Personally I've no interest in stroking his already hyper inflated sense of self worth further.and so I parked my comment after yours. You and I are good Mate. and I always enjoy your posts.
All of us who haven't seen Bouttier's fights with Muzio Oggiani Phillips Klein Aguillar Dibenedetto Calcabrani Broughton Aroch UncleTom Cobley etc And all the other 25 or so names that were paraded for our benefit, should hang our heads in shame.because we are obviously not qualified to offer an opinion here . How dare we presume to give our layman views? I hope and trust we are all suitably chastened? On the other hand ,having missed out on viewing 25 or so obscure fights of a guy that the viewer described as a club fighter perhaps we can congratulate ourselves for spending that amount of time on other more productive, rewarding, and enjoyable projects? Bullets missed?
if he was 'club fighter '' he fight in clubs small stage always or most fight. this is what club fighter is yes?
He was the French Middleweight Champ He was European middleweight champion.from 71 -74 winning it from world top ten ranked Duran and defending against world top ten ranked Sterling, and losing it to Kevin Finnegan a world class fighter
Liston73, Take a look at the boxing myth thread on what I posted, you will get a big kick out of it, it relates to Jean Claude Bouttier. Did you know that Nino Benvenuti and Bouttier went to visit Carlos Monzon in the penitentiary, another celebrity who visited Carlos was actor Mickey Rourke.
I only saw him fight twice and my memory isn’t what it used to be! Once against Bunny Sterling who was better than his record suggests. It was a good fight what I remember is that Bouttier was a good mover as they used to say a bit of a cutie, he looked decent to me, he stopped Sterling late on. The second time was against Finnegan what I remember was that he was well beat and Finnegan won handily. I would describe him as being better than a club fighter though.
Yeah, I know, I also find it better to be less informed on a subject when I go into a debate about it as well. Ignorance is bliss as they say.
No he wasnt. He was stripped in 1972 for refusing to defend. He won it back nearly two years later by beating Calcabrini for the title. Calcabrini had beaten Sterling for the vacant title. The fact that Sterling lost the EBU title to a guy who was 14-6-2 and who ended his career with a 19-12-3 record shows you what the EBU title was worth at that point. Of Course Sterling himself only had a 28-12-4 record at the time. But sure, go on, pretend these guys were anything more than decent regional talents based seeing a couple of their fights in which they lost. LOL.
Remembering Jean-Claude Bouttier - Boxing News (boxingnewsonline.net) If a fighter is world ranked no4 in 71, no4 in 72, and no 5 in73 , then as far as I am concerned that elevates him to a level above club fighter. I also don't think a club fighter goes the 15rds distance with one of the top 3 [possibly the no 1,] greatest middles of all time when that man is in his prime. However, I'm only an average poster and content to sit comfortably in the middle of the pack here. I think that Duck's farting again?
When he gets those ratings by virtue of more than one utter robbery then I couldnt care less what he was rated. If winning maybe, MAYBE 5 of 27 rounds and getting dropped four times and stopped once against Monzon is proof positive that he was so good then I guess we can agree to disagree. Im not as easily impressed as you.
