Say Joe Jeannette instead of Johnson gets the title shot against Tommy Burns in December 1908.He wins ,now whom does he defend against?
I think he would too, but I very much doubt he would defend against him or the other two McVey and Langford. White public opinion and financial pressures would steer him towards White Hope challengers imo
Johnson didnt but then their fight was so one sided there was no demand for a rematch. If Jeannette and Burns had a close fight its possible White opinion would drive towards a rematch.
That's a possibility, I see Burns losing that as well. Maybe Langford gets set up with a fight against Ketchell? Perhaps a similar scenario as Johnson v Ketch, with Langford eventually drilling him. I see him steering clear of Johnson tho, there d be a few white hope heavy s willing to take on Langford. Interesting question tho mcvey.
If as champion you are offered $31,500 to defend against Jim Flynn,in the US, or $5000 to defend against Sam Langford ,in the UK , who do you choose? Tough decision!lol
The way the promoters worked these black fighters back then, I suspect either way Jeanette is walking away with $500, minus deductions!
