Hey, I like Chandler. I just think he's getting too much kudos because a select few are pushing him to be something he's not. Yes, bloody good. In a good crowd of borderline great champs. But not one of THE best bantams. Not IMO anyway.
I think he's got a case for 9-15 all time at bantamweight. He suffers a bit from Orlando Canizales Syndrome, in that he tends to look good on film (at least during his peak), but suffers from a lack of top tier opposition. A bit less of a dramatic case, though, because his opposition was consistently better throughout his reign. Still, a hell of a fighter at his best. One that gives THE best bantams all sorts of trouble, no matter who they are.
I kinda like the idea of trolling flea. Especially when he returns to forum high as a kite. With that in mind I'm saying chandler by shutout. Different level technician. Up there with Floyd and Lopez.
Even I don't go that far....Not only do I think Chandler beat better opposition (even if I give highest quality wins to Zarate), but I think he is better and beats him H2H. I know I rank him higher than most and might even admit that him give him leniancy over fighters that are very close to him IMHO ! But he certainly deserves to be considered at top 10 and outside of the top 15 as Flea might imply is more ludicrious than my opposite consideration of him IMHO! I just don't understand why Zarate gets 3-5 rankings when his level of opposition does not warrant it any way shape or form. Yes, I like him, Yes, I think he is great....But not as great as he gets made out to be many.
I think this sums it up best. Chandler beat far better opposition than O.Canizales. Somebody on here once compared Chandler to BHop stylistically. A high level fighter with skills and someone who could definitely turn a fight ugly, spoil a bit. Chandler is in my top 10. I don't rate Zarate quite in the Jofre/Olivares realm. I think Chandler could give Zarate all he could handle. He's a tough day at the office for anybody. He wasn't chinny, could outbox, was surprisingly good on the inside and could be borderline dirty. Watch him against Murata (a rugged mother****er). And he beat several different styles of fighter. I don't make the case for him in the top 5, but to think those guys blow him out is unrealistic I think.
As you've already pretty much admitted and have been told about by others, you don't have a grasp on the quality of all of Zarate's scalps, nor understand how impressive it is he demolished them.
Well...WOW! I respect you as a poster, and do you think you add a lot to this forum and have great expertise on the lighter weights...but sometime you can come across as arrogant ! I have a good appreciation of Zarate in my humble opinion, and just because someone...this time me, has a differing opinion than you does not mean that we lack a grasp or understanding....From the sounds of it you seem to lack a grasp of Chandler's scalps, nor do you understand how skilled he was! Also no one aside from Little Red has even begun the process of looking into zarate's accomplishments...yourself included.
Alright I've done a bit of research and I've got to admit Carlos' resume is pretty poor in title fights but this is what I came up for what it's worth Amores June 75..BI 14 ...... WBA 7 .......fought July 75.....WKO 3 non title Sosa ..Aug 75..-BI 4 ......July 75 WBA 3 ...fought Sept 75..WTKO 4 non title Cabanela closest i can find.....April 77 BI 7.....fought Feb 77..WTKO 3 title. then the others you mentioned Ferreri Martinez Zamora Davila there are others you could mention like Nestor Baba Jiminez, a perennial contender more so after the Zarate fight and Jorge Torres rated at 12 flyweight BI time he fought Zarate but he'd been campaigning as high as super feather, don't know what the weights were when he fought Zarate.
I didn't come across any of the scribes in Jeff's day thinking of him as one of of the best ever much less having the number 1 place. Jeff was a good boxer with decent enough tools but an entire class below Zarate who would not have needed a ko to beat Jeff.
While that's impressive was Chandler ever considered the best boxer on the planet. Cause Zarate was. Over Duran and Benitez and Monzon.
Interesting??? Do you agree w/ this inhindsight?? I think people always fall in love w/ KO punchers, although more often than not they don't maintain that ranking afterwards??? Also just out of curiosity what source called Zarate the BEST? Not disputing that in anyway...By Rings annual ranking (I know they are not the end all) Zarate was never listed as the greatest Bantam of his day, so I don't see how that translates into the best overall? Chandler was recognized as that for a four year window...something only about 5 other Bantams can claim!
