Would the near peak, essentially matured 88-89 featherweight Fenech be to much for Sanchez in about 80-81 when he was a newly crowned champ? Would his crowding and mauling stifle Sanchez? On the surface I never gave Jeff that much of a chance really, but after some thought I think he could really really trouble Sanchez. I mean either way I thought he would give Salvador a hell of a fight but Im thinking now he could have maybe even upset him. Thoughts?
It would actually be a war this one. Fenech's aggression means plenty of action from the countering Sanchez so it's near non stop IMO. Sanchez has a bit more skill and Fenech is stronger. Off the top of my head i'd be thinking narrow decision for Sanchez based on his own limitless stamina matching Jeff's and his better skills stamping their mark on the cards.
Right. I definitely think that it'd be the sort of fight where both fighters would be able to say that they were won the fight. It's funny because at first I applied the ABC complex to this one, assuming that since Nelson handled Fenech and Sanchez handled Nelson that we'd be looking at an easy night for Sanchez..but stylistically there's a lot Fenech could do to puzzle Sanchez. Fenech is very underrated by many in that "effective aggressiveness" category and I figure quite often he'd find ways to get inside Sanchez and pile up points. On the other hand Sanchez always seemed calm under pressure and his counter ability is top notch. If anyone could find holes in the grueling Fenech, it would be Sanchez. What a great fight...another one of those "If Only" fights when discussing Salvador.
I have great respect for Fenech and think he was a great fighter. I just think his style plays into Sanchez's hands. I'd take Sanchez by decision but wouldn't rule out a stoppage.
yeah fenech would dive right into sanchez's counter shots..i see sanchez eating him up over 9 or 10 rounds .. fenech much last a little bit longer then gomez but he's surely getting out of there
Fenech wasn't at his best at 126 IMO. His punches didn't have the same sharpness they had at 118 and 122, plus he seemed more prone to cuts/injuries by this time. Still, he was a damn good fighter at this weight, but based on that I'd have to give Sanchez the edge. Could be a helluva fight either way though.
Keep in mind Nelson displayed next to no headmovement or defensive savvy against sanchez and was still able to give him a tough fight, via aggression and punching in bunches. Not an easy one for Sal this.
Fenech was a great crowd pleaser and an all action type fighter from the word go, and I certainly don't have anything against him, but Sanchez was something special, and would have dominated the Aussie and bedazzled him with counters and all the moves he was capable of all night long. A one sided boxing exhibition from the master Sal Sanchez.
Sanchez all day all night any day any night. Styles make fights and Fenech would play into his hands /fists all the time. Sanchez would not tire. He was also cold blooded and would not get drawn into a macho shoot out. Sanchez hit harder too. This is only lasting as long as Jeffs heart holds up. About 10 rounds i would say.
sanchez by late round tko. Would counterpunch fenech all fight long and had the chin to absorb anything that fenech could dish out. Shanchez punches would have double effect as he would catch fenech coming in, gradually taking the starch out of him. just too good a fighter, leagues above most fighters that jeff ever faced.
Fenech was decent at the weight? He still showed he was an excellent fighter up to 130 against Nelson. You know, the more experienced version of Nelson that had formerly given Sanchez hell? I agree with Mantequilla, it wouldn't be an easy fight by any stretch of the imagination. Fenech wasn't some fighter to liked to wade in with wide shots which would make countering a piece of cake. He'd bull his way in and crowd you on the inside, which is not an easy style to deal with or especially counter often. Sal's punching power would be the difference down the stretch IMO, but Fenech would give him real troubles early on before being blasted out sometime around the mid way point of a 15 rounder.
