:rofl This was the promo. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MssmdxwiMY[/ame] Some unkind types said that it was the worst ever fly on the wall acting in Australian tv history. Others said it was so bad it was good. Leon - surely you can post some on youtube.
On Fenechs fighting side we interviewed a stack of major US boxing journos/identities (inc Larry Merchant, Bert Sugar, Thomas Hauser, Al Bernstein, Brian Kenny, Ron Borges, Tim Smith, Michael Buffer, Bob Arum, Emmanuel Steward, The Colonel) and asked them for their opinion on the best Australian fighter and every one rated Fenech as our greatest ever even including Kostya. Fenech remains the only Australian to be inducted into the modern section of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota.
Fenech was great to watch, particularly when he first came on the scene. His work-rate, rawness and the clever way Mordey & Lewis promoted him, made for great entertainment. The quality of some of his opponents was certainly questionable, but not so Azumah Nelson in particular. How Fenech would have done against great fighters of similar weights from other eras we'll never know. But some of those fighters, including Aussies, would certainly have done particularly well in Fenech's era against the same opponents. As a trainer it's hard to guage from afar. Listening to his corner instructions it's probably fair to say he's no Freddie Roach. Unfortunately the very things that made Fenech so formidible in the ring probably didn't help him in retirement. He seems only a more wealthy and slightly refined version of the cocky little guy who wandered into Lewis' police gym and asked if he could spar.
Fenech would have beaten Morales..and a decent chance he beats Barerra, Marquez and a young 122 Pac. Id pick him over all...not with absolute confidence but I think he could beat them. He beats a lot of people's favorites IMO. He edges Barry Michael aswell...sorry flamey. :yikes
What a great fight at suitable weight and both at peak! Can't see Fenech KO'ing Michael, nobody could, but what an absolute war!
I honestly can't see Fenech beating Morales prime for prime. Fenech was a great Aussie fighter but failed to act like a champion many times out of the ring. I still remember the debacle with the 60yr old green grocer when he was world champion.
no wonder bawwy seems to have such a good chin....carrying mundines nuts on it forever..... fenech and bawwy, toe to toe, in 1988.....fenech wins in a brutal flogging of bawwy..
